How strictly does tech inspection look at your helmet? I have one that looks legit but isn’t snell 2015.

I think it goes by the track, if they are lazy or not. The track by me looks at the helmets closer than the car.

I have a nice DOT motorcycle helmet, but I’m guessing that it won’t pass

Helmet must be DOT and Snell approved . They check my helmet everytime I go through Tech. I bought a new one through Summit Racing as they can only be so old. So I'm good for a few years.....Jim

This^^^ I used to run a motorcycle that had quarter mile trap speeds in the 140+mph range in blue jeans. Track couldn't care less as long as I had a kill switch!:D For the record, it was stupid, and I was young, dumb and invincible (so I thought) at the time. I wouldn't advocate it.

But it does depend on the track. Some are struck on certain things, some are not. My 2 cents (and it probably isn't worth that) is helmets with up to date certs are pretty cheap, I think I paid $95 for mine (HJC). Is your head really not worth one C-note? You can skate by on some stuff, and I've done some sketchy things (see above), but don't skimp on safety. It may end up being the last thing you ever cheap out on.

Mine is a Snell 2005 and they still let me use it the last time I was there. Hoping they're still that easy to get along with. I store it in a box in the basement so it probably hasn't been exposed to direct sunlight for 10 minutes in it's entire lifetime.

Good to know and thanks for the help so far everyone. Another question, how important is helmet size when wearing the helmet?

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

We spend thousands on cars, spend a few hundred on your @ss.
Gear up properly, every time. It is on you.

My little brother techs at KID in Wichita. Consider him the "last check" and QA of your program.

He's an asshole about safety, you can bet your life on it.

    Have fun, be safe. :)

All jokes aside, alot of people forget,...there is a guy beside you,...that may not give a rat's ass about you or your car,.. all he is concerned with is getting his $400 jumkyard 5.3 LS down the track with 30lbs of boost and dry rotted slicks so he can brag about how he ran a 5.80 to the 1/8 once before he drove over the crank and into the front of your car,...so even if your not crossing the line at 120+ mph in a vehicle with aerodynamics of a Uhaul truck you still need to be protected and aware
