qjet for the first time in two decades

I have been fooling with the turbo regal since I bought it so the GS pretty much got mothballed. Last time we had it running it caught fire due to a leaking fuel line. Rubber lines are the devil. If you don't remember when you last changed yours out do it now. This fire happened 2003 or so. It was traumatic for me but I had the regal so I went that way.
Anyway fast forward to now. We pulled the carb off to look at the numbers. Looks like it was built on the 14th day of 1970 so it might be the original to the car. Not sure. Anyway, I bought a couple(ok four) qjets along the way. One is a 7044244 so I think that is an 800 cfm unit from 1974. Build code is 2063, 206th day of 1973. I think this is the one we want to overhaul. We went ahead and ordered some parts and a kit from the quadrajetpower(thanks mark). We are looking at this carb to verify it is in fact an 800cfm. We measured the primary to see how big it is. Suppose to be 1 7/32" as apposed to the 750cfm should be 1 3/32".
Looks like we need to be able to measure down in there where it necks down.

I pulled the plugs out of the engine and put in some acetone /transfluid mix as it hasn't been turned over since the fire. I hope it isn't locked up. I kept thinking I was going to assemble another engine to swap in but work, family and life so that never happened. I have a 455 block I picked up in Houston when we were there in the mid 2ks. I have a pair of tall port 430 heads I was going to try out but with the advent of decent aluminum heads in thinking if I do build an engine it will get those and a roller cam. Staying with manifolds either way. I got enough of headers in my youth. I don't need those Last how ever many horses. I'll make due with what it makes.

It has CZ metering rods. We pulled the "air horn " off. This looks to be the one to use unless someone has objections.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

larry is correct the 244 carbs were 750 cfm small block carbs until 75 or 76.

pre-75 800cfm were the 240 big block carbs.

Right, the 7044244 is 759 cfm, and so is the 17056212 Chevy carb. The 17059553 Oldsmobile is an 800 cfm capable Quadrajet.

So I guess I need to either keep buying or can I swap stuff onto the olds one to have it be a decent unit for the 455? At this rate doing the one that came off might just be easier. Even though I guess it is a 750 xfm unit too.

I have plenty of Buick 800 cfm cores if you want to do some swapping.

    Mark sent you a pm,

So, it appears i am looking for a 7045240, 7042240, 7044240, 7043240. Am i on the right track here? 2016-03-01_14-53-26.jpg
    so many numbers.
If this olds unit will do the 800cfm can I swap stuff like the choke and such on to it and "make" one to work? or is swapping stuff asking for trouble. It seems these newer ones all have the electric choke. I guess that would work but the one I have is the kind with the spring in the manifold. Not sure what this is gonna entail but kiss is usually my chosen method. This might lead to just overhauling the original and going from there.

And thanks for all ya'll's help. I really appreciate it.

I prefer to keep Buick carb on Buick engine. Keep in mind, every quadrajet is calibrated for its original application, and moving one to another requires recalibration for optimal performance.

For Buick 800 cfm divorced choke, you need:
    7041540
    7042240
    7043240
    7044240

Avoid the 7045240, as it was a single year, 3 primary rod system.

I shall keep an eye out for those numbers. and from the reading I am to avoid units with things like this on them.

I guess the 'remanufacture" process does things that can't be fixed.

Correct! Stay away from those for sure!

I scored a 7043240 off the eBay on the cheap(if $38.50 shipped is cheap) . We will see what arrives as the description said for overhaul or parts. I believe this to be one of the ones Mark so kindly listed for me.
I have some parts and a kit that can go in. Very excited .
I'll post more when it arrives and see what we get.

That is a good price. I use the 7043240 quite often. Great design. In fact, I have that carb feeding my 462 for street and strip use.

all right, all right , all right, I was digging around in the garage today and came upon a box labeled 800cfm qjet. Curiosity got the best of me and i pulled it out and busted it open. Low and behold I believe I have what I need here.

looks like the numbers for a 72 model. Big thanks to mark for the stuff I did buy. Packed well and as described.
car is in the trailer(thanks $ hitt y neighbors for calling the city). They will get theirs back when I get this thing running and take it to work early on Sunday mornings.
thanks for all the help so far, this is just getting started. Volleyball is almost over and softball wont start until spring, though I do have a little hydroponics project growing greens and such for better health. Kids wont be here forever and I'm trying to last as long as possible with good diet.

we moved in about five yrs ago. I'm still finding stuff. It is crazy.

I got some stuff to do the "Mr. Wizard" treatment to the distributor and timing.

I have that other carb soaking trying to get the butterflies loose. Always something right. Haha

Don't the 800cfm Q-Jets have a slash cut on the vent for the float chamber, and the 750's are a straight tube?

That is true for the 71-74 Buick units as they came from the factory yes.
