Hard to start. Smoke coming out of exhaust. Car won't idle. Gas coming out on intake manifold. How hard to remove needles? Help

Take a pair of vice grips and pinch off the 3/8 rubber line leading into the fuel pump. start the engine and let it run until it runs out the fuel in the bowl. Then start the engine again. The sudden rush in of fuel past the needle/seat may clear any dirt. Then again, it may not, in which case, you will need to take it apart and replace the needle/seat and set the float level.

Also, depending how old the carb. is it may be a BAD float.

Larry Should I change oil and filter? Do you think to much gas in oil. I did drive the car down the block and back 4 miles.

Check the oil level and smell the oil (away from the car). If it smells like gas, just change the oil. What Tom T. is talking about is "heavy float", where the composition material soaks up fuel and thus becomes heavy. If you search the internet, you can find the weight for a good float, and compare that to the one you have. The difference is some small number of grams, so you may not have a scale that accurate.

John Osborne Rebuild. 12 yrs ago. But just started driving car very low miles on motor and carb. Tearing apart checking floats. Could be small hard dirt. I will post this weekend out come. Replacing Motorcraft plugs too. I hope this issue gets fixed. The car ran magnificent . John did an excellent job. Starting was a dream.

Plugs are Motorcraft asf 42c should I keep these? Lots of guys like'm. And the car ran excellent. Feedback please

12 years ago, we didn't have the ethanol resistant carburetor parts of today. Your carburetor needs to be updated, especially the accelerator pump, needle/seat.

Yes . But never had ethanol in that motor. I only run Turbo blue mixed 50/50 with ethanol free unleaded. We hear in suburbs North of Pittsburgh Have a distributor that Carry both. Yes we are fortunate. Carbs / ethanol do not mix But it may be getting rebuilt again because it sat 12 yrs.

Larry's right, parts are different now than that long ago. After any carb has any fuel in it, dries out, and cycles that way over months and especially years, the accelerator pump and seat get hard and won't seal. Floats have issues also. I never use the old internal parts.

Did you ever get a thicker spacer? I switched from 1/8" to 1/4" gasket (not spacer) and am happy with that on my mild motor.

I had an NOS heat Sheild from 71-72. Put on moroso .5 spacer under Sheild . And just had carb rebuilt. Put it on today. Car never ran so well! Throttle response is unbelievable . Very happy! World of my shoulders. Car really runs fantastic. Thanks for asking Matt. No regrets on spacer.

Had on ol timer rebuild the Q-jet. My buddy said he could do it in the dark. He wasn't lying . Throttle response is amazing. I wish I was good at throwing them together. But let the masters do what they do
