Just thought I'd mention that they do make a DOUBLE oversize oil pan bolt. You just have to be careful when initially installing them and when tightening later. Whenever I think there is a chance of the oil pan plug leaking I put a little dab of RTV around the bolt head/washer and tighten it up. Let it setup for a while and no leaks. When I've used the oversize plugs I use a large metal flat washer that just fits it and then the supplied soft washer and then a dab of RTV. Let it setup and no leaks for sure. The OS bolts never have a washer built into the head like stockers do so they chew into the soft washer causing problems. Unless you're changing your oil monthly I can't see the problem fussing with a little RTV once in a while. A lot less work than changing the oil pan especially if you go with pulling the engine. Not necessary with a 350 and not really necessary with a 455(although it is noticeably harder to do in the car than the 350). Obviously if you have other things to do to the engine then by all means pull it out. Or, you could use one of these, in an appropriate size: http://www.hydraulichoses.com/Produ...uyXLAoKKAVELdJkOvb1sWr9tiARmnoohoCR6wQAvD_BwE A washer sized to the o-ring is available which encloses it and provides the correct spacing. Sometimes you can even find the o-ring and washer bonded together. Might have to drill and tap the existing hole of course. Jim
I’m going to try and swap the pan with a spare I have as opposed to retapping for now. I cleaned her off but the rails were a little rusty. This is how they turned out. A slight amount of pitting. Anything I can do to smooth them out more? or are they a non issue with a little gasket spray and the gasket (cork one from TA). Don’t worry I am going to clean the paint off.
Looks good, as long as the area around bolt holes is flat so it will seal. That's important. Don't over tighten to distort.
Update. Went and bought a hoist, early Father’s Day present is what my wife called it. I removed the carb, radiator shroud and driver side front tire (to get hoist closer). Spent a good bit of time figuring out how to get the motor mounts unbolted, couldn’t find a good way to work the ratchet and hold the wrench ( but I did figure out the best way to do it when I was putting it back together).i jacked the motor up and I popped off the old pan no problem and clean the block surface twice. Sprayed the gasket on both side and have the new pan bolted up. Only problem I ran into was that my torque wrench is way out of whack. I suspect that happened when I walked up to my brother using it to break his lug nuts loose with. Anyways I had to just snug the oil pan bolts up by feel (cringe). Letting her cure for 24 hours and we will see if I am doing a round two or not. The good news is while I was down there I was able to confirm the rear of the pan was leaking now the front of the newly rebuilt Muncie.
