I try and do the same and have taught my two boys (14 an 16) to pay respect to the military vets when ever they get the opportunity.

A few months ago I was at a Dairy Queen with the family and a senior gentleman walked in with a 50ish guy. The senior gentleman sat a table near us and started a conversation with a man at another table. They were both veterans, WWII and Vietnam. When I walked pass them I thanked them both for their service and shook their hands. The 50ish man cam back and sat next the the WWII vet (his dad) and made sure he said loud enough for me to hear in a snotty weasel type voice "I hate when people shake your hand, you don't know where there hands have been".
Now I think twice about extending my hand in similar situations.

I wouldn’t. A grown man can decide for himself whether or not to shake another man’s hand, and in fact he did. He’s probably embarrassed that the snotweasel spoke that way but is too polite to smack him for it. Carry on!

Wow. Believe it or not I’m at the grocery store again today, but had the chance to do the right thing and noticed a Vietnam Vet behind me wearing his gear. Told the checkout lady to put his groceries on my tab. She did and he said “you don’t need to do this”. I most certainly do and thanked him for his service.
He said “when coming back in ‘67 he was told and did, to leave his service uniform in San Francisco”. After getting off the plane. Otherwise he could be in an altercation or even spit on. Heard that many times from these vets...sad

Awsome thought and story Guy.. Truly is:)
Please please don't take it wrong and just you paying makes it really really nice thought.:)
Was there a parade of some sorts? i'm asking because why would this man be in a Vietnam era uniform? Yes they they were treated like crap coming home for something they never wanted in the first place:(
I was in Stop and Shop a while ago that am a regular customer and a man loaded up on grocery's just ahead of the person in front of me. It came time to pay and he used food stamps, but his balance on his stamps wasn't even close to what he was buying. Ok people count wrong it happens.
As he was putting grocery's back I talked over the person in front of me that I would pay for a bunch of his items that I thought were essential, the man in front of me said don't worry I will pay for them, strange but true that the guy in front of me also offered to pay and didn't want me to chip in.
The cashier to who I have gone through her line plenty and actually knows my name, was giving me the eye treatment. Come to find out that guy does that all the time. He was thankful though and seemed to really mean it. A tiny little con job or not it felt good offering. Plus the guy had a already cooked whole roasted chicken "and it smelt good" and a few other goodies that i'm sure made his day.

Edit: Ive been searching for maby certain Vietnam battle dates or even un published holidays because I feel bad talking about a man that was probably in Nam. Could be ex vets Funeral also..

    Ok!
    Brings another quick story..
I was at CVS a while back and Vietnam Vet had the hat and shirt on waiting for a script and a young guy, well i'll say 30's came in with his units hat and shirt on and I guess they had the same "regiment"?? and a instant conversation began and when I left they were both going for a cup of coffee to talk..
    Instant bond:)

My wife and I stopped giving money to homeless in Lethbridge as we have a severe drug problem here. What we do, if they ask for money for food, is to offer to purchase a meal for them. We have been taken up on this twice in a decade. Both times, told the guy to order whatever they wanted and had them eat at our table. After the way I was raised (dirt poor), I will not see anyone hungry if they ask for food.

One girl asked for bus money to go to the Emergency department. Unfortunately for her, my wife is a nurse. She offered to do an assessment and drive her to the Emergency at the hospital. She demurred, then left quickly.
