I am working with PPG DLL lacquer. Up to now, I have used DTL876 as my reducer. When I went to my local PPG Platium dealer for more 876, I was told it was no longer available. In its place, they recommended a non-PPG medium lacquer thinner. I was told that it is completely compatible with the DLL and the 876. Is that so, or am I asking for trouble? Should I search around for another distributor that may be able to get it? Thanks, Art B
It's been over 20 years since I shot lacquer, but, I've never heard of compatibility issues with it. With urethanes you can't mix brands, you must be careful about everything. I know they make wash quality and paint quality lacquer thinner, the wash quality can have oil in it that would cause fish eyes if you paint with it. Shoot a test panel, if you don't get fish eyes you should be good to go.
Good Evening philbquick: Thanks for your reply. I will spraying a satin black on the underside, interior and firewall. I should be able to tell after getting the underside done. DTL876 doesn't smell like lacquer thinner. Art B
I have shot ppg lacquer with different brands of thinner/reducer with no ill effects. I would say just make sure to use high quality product. P.S. DTL 876 definitely is lacquer thinner.
I have the underside, interior, firewall and cowl primed and painted. I did use the non-PPG thinner and it went down nice and smooth. I did an extra 17% thinner to minimize ant orange peel and roughness in tight area and it worked out great.
