Can someone tell me why some rich bastard has to win the jackpot everytime. This time the president of 3 construction companies won. I wish i could afford to go and plop down $100 on powerball tickets. Anyone that can do that either doesn't need money very bad or they have a serious gambling problem. Just one time i would like to hear a story of a poor guy that bought 1 Ticket, not 100 tickets, and won the jackpot.

Sorry about the rambling, just a poor guy that needed to vent some anger.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people died in several wars to allow people the freedom to become as prosperous as they like. Rich is relative. I'm sure you are extremely rich compared to some folks who live in say...Africa, China, Cuba, Albania,...I'm sure you get my point.

Average people win lotteries all the time. I heard that the first thing he was going to do was to try and give back jobs to several thousand employees who where retrenched just before Christmas. He sounds like a worthy winner to me. He bought his ticket at a gas station and in fact I think that he bought just the one ticket. The news carried the story down here in Australia as the largest ever winner from a single ticket.

I'm not upset that I don't win lotteries (in fact once I saw all 8 of my numbers come up - and no, I didn't have a ticket in that week). I'm glad that they exist and allow us a little dream every now and then when we (due to being very bad at maths) buy one.

Being so angry(?) so as to tell a winner to kiss my *** is not really a very flattering look but then again that's only my opinion.

In spite of all the 'good' that politicians would like us to believe the lotteries do, all they really end up doing is filling the general funds of the respective state governments!!:Do No: Originally, they were supposed to benefit the schools, which in turn would lessen the burden on property tax payers!!! Now look at things...the revenue from lottery tickets goes into the state's 'general fund' NOT back to the schools!!!:af: Just look at all the austerity budgets, or severely reduced budgets far too many of our schools have !!

WHY??? So some greedy politician can figure out yet another way to spend money on their 'pork barrel' bills!!

Unfortunately, gambling of any form creates more problems than it claims to cure!! Gambling is as addictive as ANY drug!!! I've seen far too many people spend money they don't have...or worse, to support their 'habit'!! It's not a pretty picture!!! Certainly not the one you'll see while standing in line for tickets or heading into a casino!!:Dou:

I expect we'll hear quite a few different opinions on this one!!:Brow:

Scott, it's true what you say about gambling and governments. Down here lotteries started off as a means of funding the hospitals. Now I'm pretty sure that it goes into the general coffers.

Most things done to excess are bad for you. Still, I like the feeling I get everytime I buy a lottery ticket (and I buy less than 3 or 4 a year) and wait for the draw. A healthy person should have the right to dream every now and then.

Just for fun, here are a few thoughts on money...

Lotteries are for people who are bad at maths!

But you've got to be in it to win it.

Money is not the root of all evil. It's the "love of money" that is the root of "much" evil.

If you're happy with what you've got you're already rich.

And...what would you do if you won 10's or 100's of millions of dollars? Would you not invest in Businesses of your own?

My point is; there is no sense in being peaved if someone has more of something than you. Undoubtedly, you have more of something than some one else too.

    Well said Bill.

I remember learning about the "schools" issue as a journalist. It is irritating to know how the advertising led people to believe at least a percentage, if not most, of the proceeds would go to the schools.

As it turns out, lottery money goes into the general fund. School funding technically comes from the lottery, but only the amount that the legislators say, just as it always was.

    Frustrating, isn't it?

Don't worry Bill...I don't have a problem with that line of reasoning!! I've actually played 2 or 3 times before too! One of them was a 'freebie' though!

I think if everyone that played the lotteries had that same theory, they'd be better off! A buck here...and a buck there - no big deal! I just hate to see guys waste $20 and more a week on lottery tickets!:Dou: I used to work with a guy that had a $20-$40 a week 'habit'. Of course, he was a Vietnam Vet...can't really blame him for dreaming big....:) If anyone deserves it - may as well be him.

I want to give you some HOPE here. When I play, it is strictly 1 or 2 dollars a week.It only takes 1 ticket to win.
My cousin had never played Lotto before, and Dad talked him into trying it. 1 ticket for Fantasy 5 here in GA. He wins the jackpot.
171,000!!!! After taxes it came to 117,000 free and clear. As far as I know he hasn't played any more. As far as Dad goes, he still can't believe it.....
The lottery money certainly has contributed a lot to GA schools, especially with computers, library upgrades, and other much needed media.
If I were to ever win a big sum, guess I'd have to have a GSX after all....:Brow:

    I bet (No pun intended, I'm a Minnesotan don'tchya know. :pp )
I don't spend $10.00 in a year on lottery tickets.
Thank goodness gambling doesn't do anything for me.
When the wife and myself have stopped at a casino, we each are bored to death with it in 20 minutes and leave.
He took the cash option, which gives him something near 100 million.
I can't imagine having that kind of change.
You would need a pretty big mattress.

Some poor bastard did win the Powerball with one ticket and won $180 million 2 years ago! He was from Kentucky, out of work, on his last week of unemployment, way behind on child support and in divorce court.

He now lives in Florida with a new wife, $4 million dollar house, Ferrarri's, a Lambo Diablo, Mercedes's, diamonds, the whole bit!

He, the Powerball winner from Kentucky, has now become the rich bastard you depise!

Guys....the odds are basically the same if you buy 1 or 100 tickets.

for example, here in NY we have lotto 54. 6 numbers right wins.....numbers chosen must be 54 or below.

    ODDS - 54x53x52x51x50x49= 18,595,558,800

That means there are over 18 and a half BILLION combinations.

If you play 1 number, that leaves 18,595,588,799 other possiblities

If you play 100 numbers that leaves 18,595,588,700 possibilities

For all intensive purposes, the odds are the same......even if you play 10,000 tickets !!

....basically your odds are a Heck of ALOT better trying to win a raffle for a beautiful '69 Skylark:TU:

It galls me that the winner is ALREADY a millionair, I agree that it would be nice to see some poor smuck( Like me ) win with the lowly one ticket.

Hell I was ready to head to COL tomarrow for a chance at the 300+ mill jackpot if no one won it on X-mas. and only spend a buck, well maybe 2 dollers

Had no idea this was going to be such a controversial topic. Please forgive me if i have offended any soldiers that have fought for our right to play the lottery. And i'm very thankful i'm not starving like some people in Africa. It was just a joke. You guys really take stuff serious around here, not much like the other forums i've been on. So for all of you rich bastards that i told to kiss my ass, i give my most sincere apologies.
