Power Timing Help

    Pretty common actually. The first HEI didn’t come on a Buick engine until 1974. Distributors differ in the amount of mechanical advance built into them, it varied by year and engine line. You’ll have to figure out what yours has and go from there.

    As far as carburetors go, most people think any Q-jet can replace another. Not so, they all had different calibrations, again, it varied by year and engine line and it was more than just jets and rods. A 455 needs more air at idle than a 350. If you put a 350 carburetor on a 455, it won’t want to idle. Most will adjust the primary idle screw in, but what that does is cause the engine to run on the primary side of the carburetor, and not on the idle system. That causes all kinds of frustrations.
