Hey guys- I got a new to me 72 skylark a few weeks ago that has a 70 GS 455 /TH400. The thing is a beast and I love it but something is up that I can't pinpoint/don't have enough knowledge to do so. 1. The car has power steering and when at a full stop and turning the wheel it whines. the fluid is newer and full and the power steering was added a couple years ago. Any idea? No leaks and everything looks solid. 2. When in reverse or turning at slow speeds I notice the rear tires slipping for traction. Almost shuddering and trying to spin. The tires are pretty new so its not traction I don't think.......Any ideas? Hoping the rear end isn't going or perhaps any bearings. Thanks
Assuming you have 8.5 plate posi rear gears, or posi plate gears - In regards to shuddering when turning, make sure you have posi juice in the rear end. (Either synthetic or Dyno oil - you must have the posi additive). After verfication, go to a large tar or concrete lot, make figure 8 turns - the slower the better, the turns must be as sharp as possible. The tight turns forces the posi plates to open, allowing the posi fluid to enter into the plates/gears. This many times has helped with the shuddering. Hope that works for you - Byron
If you haven’t owned the car from new, you really can’t say it is original to the car. Lots of parts can get changed in 46 years. The rear should be an 8.5 10 bolt.
Very True. Thanks guys. I didn't think the stock rear was posi.... but either way let me get out there and check and get back to you.
raise the rear end of the car so that the wheels are off the ground. Place tranny in neutral. now spin a rear wheel. if both wheels spin in the same direction, u have a posi. Otherwise u u have a peg leg. If u have an orig posi (probably an Eaton) u should not use synthetic rear gear oil.
Jacked up the car today. and turned each rear wheel. It would turn maybe a full turn or two then catch the tire on the other side of the car and then they would both turn. I am guessing its a peg leg open rear?
How do check rear diff fluid level on those cars? Also how to change (just remove 10 bolt and scrape gasket and put new gasket?) where do you fill it back up at?
on the side there is a plug ...a 3/8 ratchet extension will fit ,when full it will ooze out and is changed how you described .......best thing is to change to fresh stuff when its full it will ooze out of same plug hole.....also use about a 10 inch long 3/8 hose to help you fill out of the bottles tip but some aftermarket rear end cover have the fill plug on the cover as well as a drain you ps whining while at full stop is almost normal ...i would worry if i happened while cruising but change that oil also while you have your hands dirty from rear end
Yes, the TA girdle covers are very nice and have that feature. http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1807 The big bolt above the center line of the cover is the fill, the smaller to the left of the 6:00 bolt is the drain. For a stock cover, you'll have to R&R the cover to drain the oil. Then remove the fill port and add fluid until it just dribbles out.
the one Larry is showing is a good choice bcs it also has a easy simple girdle set up that helps prevents bearing cap deflection under heavy load plus it looks good
If you get it, paint it. If you like the aluminum color, paint it that color. If you don’t it will get cruddy looking. Paint will seal the aluminum. Same with intakes.
