is there any other year of posi units or limited slip that will fit a 10 bolt rear end, for a 1972 buick gs?
It's an 8.5 10 bolt. Good sturdy rear with bolt in axles. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/posi.htm http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/85rear.htm You can also buy a new Eaton Posi out of the Sumitt or Jegs catalog.
There are TONS of Limited slip Units for the 8.5. Posi term is a NICKNAME Your calling out the same thing in your statement. Posi is limited slip and vise versa. Oldsmobile is anti spin Pontiac calls thiers safty track AMC twin grip Ford track lock Mopar Sure grip etc.... So back to the 8.5 You have Eaton (clutches), Auburn (cones), True Trac (worm Gears), Yukon Dura grip (eaton style) Lockers mechanical Power trax, Detroit Locker, Grizzly locker They are more aggressive in lock-up and can cause noise in turns to release axle torsion twist . If you have bolt in axles you can use FULL SPOOL for Maximum traction to both wheel and normall drag race or dirt track racing. There is also a super low cost mini spool designed for dirt track low buck boys and girls... Finally you have last hope Lincoln locker...WELD the spiders in a open diff. ...LOL Not recommend here. So to answer your question, yes. The 8.5 found in your car was manufactured through 1996, maybe longer. If you want to go junkyard crawling to find a new(used) differential, you'll want to stick with units probably 1989 and below, because I believe 1990 and up units were 30 spline, and wont fit your 28 spline axles. These units can be found on ebay for reasonable prices too every once in a while. Be mindful of carrier break part numbers if you want to use your original ring and pinion. You ight also want to consider a bran new unit - Monzas who has responded earlier or Everyday Performance can probably provide a new Dura Grip style unit for very reasonable money too....
Trutrac has no clutches to wear out, no ratchet to jerk and pop, and eliminates the weak spider gears. Smooth and very strong.
Sorry EVERYTHING WEARS....lol. The worm gears DO wear. And the hole wear. That is like saying the ring and pinion do not wear...
