68 rear will be wider- Plus watch out for the OLDS 12 bolt rear the parts will be harder to find Like gears and posi units. Bearings and seals should not be an issue they are all available and not too oddball at all.

If the 12 bolt rear your looking at or have bought has BOLT IN AXLES which are 28 spline like your buick it is the OLDS 12 bolt or 'O' type rear - 10 bolts hold the ring gear to the carrier.

Chevy 12 bolt will have c-clip axle retention and 30 spline axles but is a true 12 bolt which has 12 bolts that hold the ring gear onto the posi or open carrier unit

I still say rebuilkd your 8.2 It will hold just fine even with some track time and slicks. New gear choices are 3.36 3.55 3.73 3.90 we have posi units and if you have 2.93 3.08 or 3.23 we have posi units for those ratios too. Good luck wishing luck on the diff. Jim

Got a line on a good 12 Bolt 71 Chevy rear. Not POSI, 2.73 ratio.

Is this rear a "corporate" rear and will it work under a 64 Lark?

According to JDRace.com, the 65-71 Skylarks are listed as supported vehicles....is this info accurate?

    Thanks,
    Eric

It will work with a few changes:
    - adapter u-joint
    - you'll have to grind on the upper control arms for clearance
    - Might have to shorten the driveshaft
And like Jim said in the post above, it'll be a bit wider, and will have c-clips to hold the axles in.
Not really a 'corporate' rear, it was used primarily in Chevys, but Canadian-built Buicks used them too.
Parts will cost less for the Chev 12 bolt than the older 8.2 BOP rear, factor that into your decision.

I read online that the 70-72 Monte-Carlos used the 12 bolt rear.

    Thanks for the info.

My primary focus at this point is widening my options for wheel and tires. I've been searching all through the board trying to get a definitive answer on the max size wheel/tire combo with the stock rear.

I'd like to have at least an 8 inch wheel underneath her in the back, 10 if possible.

If the stock 64 rear will accommodate it, I'd be more than happy rebuilding that on per Monzaz's recommendation.

Brian you are not correct on the different springs you se the same springs as the 64-66 open on one end the upper mounting is the same full open the lower is pigtailed but the mounting pads is slightly higher on the 67 - 72 ( pig tailes on both ends ) rear diff;s

I plan on buying all of my parts from him.

At this point, it is not very cost effective to ship an entire axle from Ohio to Cali....or is it? :Do No:
