All of the 71 and up 9 3/8 rears have 12 bolts holding the cover on. The best way, is to look for the tag.

Then just go for the carrier and pinion cause the mounts are different for the axles on different brands or just the actual center posi piece with the spider gears inside the carrier, or some other solution?

Thought they had 10 bolts on the cover, and 12 on the ring gear - ???

The 66-70 9 3/8" rear has ten bolts on the cover with a 12 bolt gear, but the 71-75 type has twelve bolts on both the cover and ring gear. All 71-76 B,C body rears interchange as a whole assembly as far as I know. I've swapped between Catalinas, Deltas, Rivieras and LeSabres with no problem.

I look at the shape of the cover... unmistakable.

So full size BOP with 9 3/8's shared the posi unit. I'll stick my nose under what's available and then if I find one I'll take the carrier and pinion right? How do you get the pinion gear out by the way, is it tricky?

Yes, within their "generations" they share.

If you're only wanting the posi, you only need the carrier. If you want the gears for their ratio, then you need to ring and pinion gears as a set. To get the pinion gear out, you'll need a BIG socket, and a LONG wrench, and some room. Before you take the carrier/guts out, pull the nut off of the front of the driveshaft flange (using the parking brake/internals to hold the pinion from turning), then the flange, then the pinion goes out the back of the housing (after everything else is out of there).

Easier/cheaper to get the whole rear as a complete setup unit, unless you're wanting to swap gear ratios, in which case you have to setup everything anyway. What I'm looking for is either a complete axle swap, or swapping out just the carriers and keeping the gears in the same housing, so I don't have to mess with re-setting the pinion depth, etc. Just have to shim the posi carrier left/right to get the original backlash.

sounds good, just the internals of the carrier goes out, then spacing it in place again in the original carrier.

correct, but don't forget the rear drive E bodies (riviera). these rear assemblies were available in 8 1/2", 8 7/8" and 9 3/8". you can use ring and pinions from the station wagons in those years but the rear axle assembly will not swap because the wagons used leaf springs.

The buick rivs rearends will work in ponchos..... I found a 73 GS with 3.23 posi and it bolted right in my 74 grandville!,With that little bit of info I have the original r/e out of my car with 2.93 gears and I have a seperate posi carrier for it too ....May be looking to sell it as a whole deal?

Coming back to that info, well does this mean, a whole rear end of maybe the Chevy Impala will fit into the 71 Riviera?

    Thanks

How does a posi help you get better mileage?

On the highway aren't you using only one wheel to drive anyway? Even with a posi? I thought the "other" wheel only kicks in if the normal drive one slips.

The only way a posi would help is if you always had your foot into it and kept that tire spinning. Maybe he means the 2.93's :Do No:

Yes, the entire housings will swap out within their "generation", ie, '71-76.

The '70 axle housings are oddballs and won't go into later or earlier cars, but does anybody know if an early generation (pre-'69) axle housing will go into a late ('71 and later) car?

I sure could use a 28 spline 8 7/8 posi unit and some 3:08, 3:23 or 3:42 gears if anyone has some to get rid of.

    Thanks.

Sorry about my ignorance in transmissions, but I just looked at mine which has 12 bolts on the cover. What does that mean ?

    Transmissions?

All 1971 and newer 9 3/8 rears have 12 bolts holding the covers on them. No matter if it's a posi or not. (I hope that answers your transmission question!)

i figured i'd save the money i'd spend on headache medicine trying to get a 9 3/8 rear figured out and spend it on the nine inch :TU: [IMG]
    2 1970 9 3/8s, one posi and one open, both 2.56 :boring:
i am gonna keep my eye out for a ring and pinion set for the posi though...i think this was answered in a previous post, is it 3.02 that is the lowest ratio i could fit in that posi?
sorry i've posted this pic a few times.....i haven't actually installed it yet, so the best i can do is keep looking at it
