Police escort with lights blazing infront and behind Sportn'Wood

"how FAST do you want to go ?"

... that was the very strange and troubling question asked to me by two local officers before they got into their Cruizers

It all started innocently enough - Last july in the heat of the summer I was prepping Sportn'Wood for the ~1500 mile trip there and back to Columbus Ohio for the BPG Nationals. I had just gotten back my original driveshaft after having it ballanced in an attempt to cure a vibration issue - I wanted to eliminate that one variable first ...

So, I get the shaft back in a week and its blazing hot .. not even cooling off at night. I keep putting off the job until one night it was supposed to cool a bit before a front came in. When I got home from work I opened the garage up wide to air it out .. and at about 10:30pm I go out to the garage and get to work .. about an hour later I'm a ball of sweat but finished with the shaft install and a few other things - clean the tools and I hop in for a test spin.

I was headed for the local parkway where I wanted to get it up to trip-cruising speed .. 65-75 mph. Temps in the green, I pull out and on my way to the parkway there's a 7/11. Hmmm a Slurpy would go down mighty nicely as a reward for a job well done ..

.. as I'm about to pull in I see two police cruisers parked in the main lot. Realizing my new registration sticker is lying on the dash with the old one stuck on the glass I decide to avoid any confrontation and pull in to the side lot connected to the strip stores. I go in.. get the brain-freeze goodness to quench my drench and head out only to find the two cruisers blocking Sportn'Wood in her stall with their side lights blaring on her and the two officers shining their flashlights all over. I had left all the windows open and one was practically falling in through the drivers window as I approached.

"Good evening officers .. is there something I can help you with ?"

    "Is this your car ?"

Why yes it is .. is there a problem ?

Yeah .. its too Freakin' NICE !! Is that 32,000 miles or I32,000
We got a bet - I say its 32,000 with the original paint

Well, you'd be correct then - its all original !! Wanna See ?

... So, I spent the next half hour making two new friends who were totally in love with my Sporty. Turns out, one of them is the Pres. of a multi-marque car club 2 towns over where they host a cruise-in every week. After much showing and converation, In a friendly way they asked what i was doing out so late .. so I tell them all about my upcoming road trip and about having just done some work so I was headed to the pkwy for a little high speed testing

Thats when one said - "you don't have to go down to the highway .. they just paved the road out front and its straight for the next 2 miles !!" and the other replied, "Yeah, we'll give you an escort - how fast do you want to go !?!?!?!"

I thanked them for their generosity but insisted it wasn't necessary ... its only a 30 mph zone afterall

"Come on - it'll be Fun !! I'll go in front of you - try and keep up now :pp - then you pull out, and he'll follow us. So - How Fast do you want to go ?"

    Umm .. 60 is fine

"Nonsense .. you know you're going to be cruising at 75-80 mph to Ohio - lets go 80"

And so it went - Nailing it hard out of the parking lot, the EveryDay Performance-freshly rebuilt QuadraJet sucking and roaring its wide open 4-barrel harmony through all 3 gears until we're sailing along at 80mph with one Cruiser leading the way and the other following ...

... Lights-A-Flashin off into the nite

It was actually a pretty weird experience driving that fast with the lights flashing so close both in front and behind me .. I think they were both bored and were just looking to have some fun. The officer who wasn't the car club pres. said he had a 9 sec. Nova that hadn't been out in years, so they were both car guys.

.. wouldn't surprise me at all if they raced the Criusers on slow nites :Dou:

Great story Alan. Here's one of mine involving the Po-Poo.

Was comming home from a Friday nite of cruising with my L.I. buddies, driving GrandNasty and heading west on the L.I.E at about 3am.
Knowing this was the last ride before I put it away for the winter and since I was only two short exits from home...."TIME TO FEEL SOME BOOOST"!

I came around a long sweeping turn right past a highway patrol cruiser at about a Buck 30. Ohhhhhhhhh$h!t !!!!
Seeing his lights come on and his cruiser now in motion I figured I had about an 1/8 mile head start and a very short distance to my exit.

I put the spurs to Nasty and flipped off my lights (a Black on Black on Black on Black car is quite stealth at night).
Nasty was going way to fast and I missed my exit, jumped off at the next one and doubled back thru the side streets.

Hit my block, punched the auto door opener and flew into the Bat Cave with tires smoken.

I lived two blocks away and was a little leery about walkin home with all the sirens flying up and down the streets. As I got brave enough to walk the walk a patrol car comes screaming up behind me and slams on the brakes. Next a cop yells out......"Hey Mister, did you see a Black car flying down the block"?

"Ohhhhhh yeah !!!!! He was flyin for sure and he went down that way real fast. Sirens and lights full tilt.... off he goes into the night to" bust the dude who out ran the highway man"!!!

Lights were coming on in the houses either from the noise the cops were making or the hysterical laughter I couldn't contain at 3am.

Funny $h!t right there.

Wait, wait, wait. This happened last July and you're just now telling us? This is a great story and could have helped me cope with the winter dreaming that I would get an escort this spring. You denied me that dream.

I think I need to hang out at more late night 7-Elevens.

I am pretty depressed that I have had this car since 2007 and have not got into one race with it yet.
Back in the mid 80's when I had my 72 GS I got into so many races every weekend I could not remember them by the next weekend. Those were the days!!
Hopefully this summer will be more productive especially after the new motor goes in!!

You will find a lot of LEO's are car guys and are cool to talk to. Do they race the patrol cars? Wouldnt you? All i can say is my D-Max will eat up a Impala, Crown Vic and a State Tahoe with no problem. Havent ran a Charger yet but after working on them at the dealer when they 1st came out i am sure i can run them. How do i know this? I have a lot of friends who are LEO's and after working Corrections " a lot of those Officers are car guys too" i got to know many of them who were not County.

In my younger days i was always getting turned in for burn outs by my neighbor who lived at least 1/4 up the road but had nothing else better to do. I would fry the tires, watch the neighbor walk into the road and then back in their yard and within 10 minutes or so a cruiser would pull up with the lights on. I would walk out and ask what they thought and they would laugh and shake their head. One night at a local convenience store a couple Sheriffs walked around an old Dodge van of mine and counted 17 violations. They were busting my balls about it when a State boy rolled in and got in on the harassment. Then when i left they were busting on me to light'em up! I was like no, That State boy will write me up for sure. The Sheriffs assured me i would be ok. I rolled out on the road and I power braked it for about 5 seconds and let her eat leaving 2 nice long rubber marks wiggling up the road a couple hundred feet. I saw the Sheriffs a couple weeks later and they were laughing their butts off. They said the State boy damn near spit out his coffee, I guess he was impressed in what the van would do.
