  4. The only thing worse than spending 1,000 at the machine shop, is going through the trouble dropping the engine in, grenading it, then removing and spending 1,000 hahah. All worked out

Wow I've never seen bearings that worn before:eek:. Good thing you found all those issues now.

When you get to ordering/ replacing the cam bearings, buy all 5 grooved bearings, not just the #1 like some folks do.
Where the oil is introduced between the bearing and cam journal from the factory works for awhile, but technically its wrong, it comes in at 9 o-clock, hemorrhages at 12 o-clock, and theres little left for the highly loaded 5 to 8 o-clock position.
With the fully grooved bearings, you clock the oil hole at 3.

  8. Well I may be dead in the water. My machinist is a little worried. It seems the bearings may have caused some wear in the cam bore.. and I cannot find OS bearings anywhere. Apparently nobody makes larger OD bearings.

Unless the bearings actually spun, there shouldn't be any wear.
By spun, I mean actually spinning in the bore enough to enlarge it, and if that's the case, the cam bearings would just fall out.
Contact Jim Weise and pick his brain, see if he has any ideas.

  10. I would agree completely. I don’t think they have spun, surely the cam wouldn’t have ate the bearing completely. Isn’t it more likely just a layer of the bearing is gone? The cam didn’t have any excessive wear- which I would expect.

Use V6 bearing, they are slightly bigger OD, I've repaired a customers cam journal that way.

  12. Thanks guys. I’ll call Jim’s place tomorrow morning and see what he thinks. I’m getting ahead of myself for sure, I’ve got a pile of new parts here and it would be shameful not to use them. There isn’t another 455 block for sale within 200 miles of me haha

  13. Wow. Seems like you Buick guys have tons of secrets

DEADMANSCURVE my first word : truck

speaking of plastic - if replacing the oem style rocker shafts with aftermarket ( trw etc ) shafts or kit be sure and pay attention to the holes for the plastic retainers . the oem shafts had a slight bevel at the hole to gently guide retainers into place . the aftermarket shafts I used did not and sheared off the pin teeth = back apart , bevel holes at machine shop , reclean everthing , new pins , reassemble .

  16. Such as the GN v6? Or 70s v6?

Buick GN v6 bearings, but you'd want the back grooved dual feed ones. GM bearings are not.
Contact Tim at TA, they have them. Also, since its a 71-72 block some oiling mods are done. But a booster plate would be recommended, easy to install, TA has them or Mellings. Theres other high performance oil mods that can be done but your application isn't necessary.

  18. Really appreciate your input sir. I find myself deep in the rabbit hole of information, appreciate the direct answer! Oil mods will be done still waiting on news from my machinist

  19. Thanks for the tip!

Your welcome. Also use the double roller timing chain set, and stage 1 fuel pump. With the double roller you need to grind the pump shaft some and elongate the pump mounting holes, The wider chain will rub the pump arm if isn't done.
