What 'clock position' are putting your rings at? Just wondering if there is more than one acceptable way to put them?

    Thanks,

    clock postions..

The important thing is to not have them at 12/6 o'clock, or 3/9 o'clock... other than that, make sure you install the two top rings 180* apart from each other, and don't line them up with either of the oil ring rails.

Personally, I put my top ring at about 1:30-2 and my second at 7:30-8.

    Thanks Jim.

With the top two rings at 8 and 2, would it be good to put the oil ring grooves at 10 and 4??

The guy I used to work for claimed to get more power from his setup than what Sealed Power recommended. I just couldn't remember what he said to use.

not trying to start a fight here but............ back in the day when i went to school for this typa stuff, one of my instructors told us that it really didn't matter about the positioning of the rings because after a while of running they are gonna line up the gaps anyways. cylinder pressures and all will force them around in the ring land as the pressure is leaking down into the holes past the pistons. that is if they are free in the ring lands.

i will agree with the not using the 6-12 positions taking into consideration the pistons loading the cylinder walls, but why not the 3-9 positions ?

feel free to correct me if i am wrong(as i have been out of the machining aspect for a few years now) but i have seen this happen on 2 blown 460 ford boat motors that i machined and assembled at the school. run them on a superflow 901 dyno and tore one down for something ????(cant remember why) but the rings had d**n near lined themselves up in a couple hours of dyno time.

the way i see it is if they are "floating" in the ring lands like they should be, you can't control where they are gonna stop every time you shut off they key.eventually your gonna have them lined up and the "leaking" cyl. pressure is gonna keep them lined up.

    i'll await your responses,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    um, er, no.........

Dave, next time you pull a core 455 apart, look for yourself to see if the ring end gaps are lined up..

    That will answer that question.
