Pictures needed

I have someoneat hand with lots of parts butI need to send himpics so he cantake a look at what I need.

I am in need of good pictures of a correct alternator for a 71 GS 455 with AC (when you search the net you find engine bays and repro stuff)

Plus a picture of a correct power steering pump pulley ( I have some billet crap on mine)

And are those the correct brackets for a 71 455 ac compressor?



Any help is really appreciated

Benny, part numbers are key. The AC brackets look correct but are tough because no part numbers are stamped on them. The long alternator arm should have part 1235837 stamped on the front of it nearer the bottom. PS pulley will have 1235776 stamped right on it. Alternator is part number 1100891 stamped on it and 55amp. Double pulley is 2.5 “ diameter but I don’t have part number handy. It’s different than 70 anyway.

Do you have a picture of an alternator? I am not going for a concours engine room but it should look factory. so I need the plug at the correct place

 

I’ll look for one. I have pictures of 70 alternators around somewhere. They look identical to 71 just numbers are different. Only problem is 70 has different double pulley than 71 which won’t be obvious in a picture. If you use a 70 your belt geometry may be off.

 

Here you go. This is my 70 GSX now s old. 71 will look the same. Again different number on pulley but looks the same.

 

Here is an untouched original 70 front view. Again double pulley is 70 number but everything looks the same as 71.

 

This is a pulley comparison. Bigger pulley is the same one as previous. Other alternator is from a 71 big car 455 with small diameter double pulley because car had heated rear glass. You can see the center area is thicker on the 71 center of pulley. You would need the bigger diameter pulley with a thick center area like that smaller one if that makes sense. I don’t have one to show you.

 

The big wide AC and alternator bracket that goes on top of the actual alternator and AC bracket looks like a 70.If it has a hole there for a ground wire,its a good one,if it does not,its for a 70 and earlier car.Bruno.

 

A funny thing I have seen with these alternators is I have seen the correct style on cars but the two halves were screwed together in the wrong orientation. It’s easy to do for someone who doesn’t know what they are doing rebuilding it. I guess it is possible that different GM makes could have used the same style and required plug to be in a different position? Anyway you need the plug to be at the top and in line with the top alternator screw hole that goes in the long arm. This is the only position that is correct. I have seen the plug oriented on the side in some Buick’s and it puts a strain on the main thick power wire. Always on top the plug should be for at least 70-72.

 

Bruno, I think I see a hole so 71. Upper part of bracket a bit to the left.

I thought that when the lower AC bracket is metal and not aluminum it's for 71 up and 70 and lower do have an aluminum lower bracket?

Yes correct. The steel is 71 and up. No part number on it just a ton of welding flash. I believe AC brackets are also same as 350.

Dave mentioned that alternators were "clocked" to the ap. The same was true for AC compressors, the clutch/coil was "clocked", also. The terminals in the front should be at 10:00, but many compressors have been changed. Something else to consider...
