    Hey Big Block guys:D
Small block guy here needs some help,
I know theres way more big blocks running around with deep sump pans than 350 guys.
Im modifying my 350 pan myself (Im bored) but the issue, if it is even an issue, is going a 1/2" deeper on the sump puts the sump even with the front crossmember, I want to go at LEAST 1" deeper which would have the sump LOWER than the crossmember, is that an issue on a street driven car?
I've only once hit the header collectors on my GS, and that was with 4 people (car was used in a wedding) coming up off a grassy area, across a sidewalk and back onto the street (high centered it)
If you guys could post a pic, or just say yes or no to the sump hanging below the crossmember would help bunches!
I bought a pan off of Mart here on the board, I have it on my bench and Im mocking up different set ups with cardboard, then taking over to my GS and checking fitment in the chassis, my engine is still fully intact, the only thing I've cut so far is cardboard;):p

Thanks Derek, I've been looking at deep pans like the link you provided.
I have room to go wider than stock, which is cool, but Im wondering how deep (low) is too deep.
Or say heck with it and turn it into a circle track car

Well, I posted that to maybe give you an idea of how to increase capacity without losing to much clearance, not necessarily turn your car into a circle track racer, unless you want to?:p:D

    Thanks Larry!
Your pan doesn't seem to hang below the crossmember.

This is what I believe to be a TA deep sump steel pan. Basically a stock pan with an extended sump area welded on. Could also be a homemade pan as I bought this engine completely done and the pan was already on it.

Stage 2 heads and headers so they don't hang as low as M/T's.
Have never bottomed the headers or the pan.

As far as oil leaks...the pan is dry but my dipstick tube likes to leave it's mark on one header tube. :D
    Sorry for the crappy pics...

That's a home made pan. TA deep sump steel OEM style pans have a different look and are built differently...…… I know these things! LOL

    Mark,
Stay flush with the bottom of the crossmember..... don't go past it... at least not by much. If you want more oil capacity go wider. The only issue when you go wider is that you'll need better internal baffling to keep the oil pickup covered at all times. I usually build a "box" with 4 swinging trap doors and the oil pickup in the center. It's a LOT of messing around to get it all working properly, but well worth it in the long run. Pic for reference.... I have better pics on my shop PC if you want a few...…….

Steve, if you don't know then I don't know who would! ;) LOL

Does the TA pan have a more rounded appearance, more like they just moved the factory sump area down and then filled in the remaining distance??

I have one of your aluminum pans with the kick outs and trap doors on my Regal, it's a beautiful piece!!

My alum SRE pan has 30% more capacity and it’s no lower than a stock pan. Huge kick outs on both sides.

Attached is a picture of the TA "Modified" steel pan. The sides carry some of the "non flat, profiled" surfaces into the new sump, but I eliminate them as they head down to the bottom of the pan. The bottom of the pan still maintains the "non-square" outline of the original pan...…. if this makes sense...LOL!

    Thanks for chiming in Steve!
You confirmed what I was theorizing, going wider (which theres plenty of room) would increase my capacity, but at the same time, that oil level, now being spread out would not be as "deep"
Thanks for the reference pic, I may hit yah up for a few more.
Im going to use 16 ga. steel, that seems equivalent to what the pan is made from.

Steve, on those modified 455 pans, the front portion that sits above the crossmember, did you deepen that slightly by adding a section, or did you "press" that depression in the pan?
Im assuming that depression is clearance for the rods in stroker set ups.

The good thing about not making it deeper, just wider you won't have to Richard around with the pickup.
