Man you can learn a lot on this forum !!! I got really excited after reading this and ran out and checked my 68 and sure enough i have both the penny and mouse turd options. The penny is mint still shiny. however the turds looked a little off so i put them under a magnifying glass and to my surprise they are both autographed by MIGHTY MOUSE. Now i know i really have something special. Can anybody give me a lead on a good shop where i can have these triple chromed for display purposes? Might not be "correct" but i intend to pass this car to my son and i want these babies protected ......Tom
UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Duane concerning the "weed joint" option question that came up earlier. Duane corrected me in that this option is more commonly refered to as a "roach joint". He noted in particular that the "gator clip" was indeed in addition to the "roach joint" option, and that finding the two together is quite rare. Additionally, as was mentioned earlier the roach joint was an ashtray upgrade, and not part of the rear seating mechanism. (though their use often found them in that area) Lastly, Duane recommended we look to see if the car has the Colt .45 Underdash Ventilation System, because the "roach clip" option and the .45 Vent System were often checked off at the same time on the factory order form and or the dealer prep sheet. Per Duane, if the car is equipped with the .45 Ventilation System, then its a sure bet to have also included the Roach Joint option as well. Sure enough!
I thought the "weed joint" was a Dealer only option and you had to buy them in nickel or dime bag quantities only. Not sure what type of bag the pennys came in thougho No:
Even though your build sheet may specify your car as having the weed joint, the line workers often would forget to install it.
One of my cars actually came stock with an original McDonalds coffee stirrer, you know the ones that looked like a little spoon. I heard they were often used for un-lawful purposes, and thats why they were changed. It was hidden in one of the heater ducts. I found it tracking down a noise. Duane
o shoot i removed the carpet from my 1970 skylark and found a penny. it was all rusted so i threw it somewhere in the car hope i can still find it
:beers2: When I sold Chebbys in the 70`s I delivered a Caprice Sedan to some old folks and they had a door rattle. Service dept found an empty Vodka bottle in the rear door with Wisconsin liquor tag on it. the car was built in Dec. I know what the workers in Janesville were doing on the Assy line back then
Weren't those part of the special DLR group? Part of the Southern Calif CaraVAN of HALcyon rodENt suppliers.:beer They occasionally would "Run with The Devil", usually preceding an "Eruption". Last ones I heard about, went for "$51.50", which was the "Best of Both Worlds". The question begs to be asked, what would the discovery of TWO original Lincoln pennies, ie: one on each side, do for both the value, and judging??
Well thats easily answered. Two pennies would indicate an "SCO" option:Smarty: . The car would have to be specially ordered that way. Same thing for the turds too. Extra turds are an SCO as well. The problem is that many dealers didnt even know the two penny option even existed. Its only through Duane's exhaustive research on this that we know what we do about it . If you look at your trim tag, it should be stamped SCO. Happy hunting!
I ended up with the STO ... Second Turd Option. I think that the mice were working overtime on the build. Maybe all 17,000+ Hardtops had this option. They put them under the back seat. They do however have the most sought after tapered ends. I'll bet the penny is under the front seat. Haven't gotten to that yet as the Cat's in paint right now. Should be getting her back soon. Looks like next week for sure. Can't wait!
Was the penny option available on base model Skylarks, or was it GS only? Also, if a stage car had its original drivetrain, but not its #'s penny, how much of an adverse effect would that have on its value?
I would encourage everyone to make sure to use the "correct" Buick mouse turds and not the Chevy ones. Even the pennies we use should be "incorrect" Buick ones before anyone even thinks of using a Chevy one. I hate hearing "Hey, nice Chevelle" every time someone see's my Buicks, we have to make a big effort to separate our Buicks from undue Chevy influence. This misguided identity crisis our Skylark/GS's suffer will only end if we all are dilligent ! Don't be a "slacker" and use "chevy stuff" on your Buicks !
Unfortunately, my car was built before the SCO became available. :TU: Maybe I should look for a wooden nickel.ray: :idea2:
A while back, I bought a '69 Riviera that had HUNDREDS of mouse turds of all sizes and shapes.AND it had 30-40 pennies under the seats, carpet, console PLUS several nickels, dimes and quarters! Is this correct? Also, there is this pungent urine smell. Is this correct also? I want to keep it original and wonder if I should record location and label all the items.
Rivieras are luxury cars and in general had more options than other cars. It may also be that it went through a special employee test program that took place out the back door at the factory. During this testing workers would often add special equipment not listed on the invoice (did you find any elongated balloons?)
Is it urban legend the Candian models had the Candian pennies or did they export lower compression US pennies for installation? Rick
I can't believe you guys didn't know that the penny was a dealer-only installed option. Sometimes the dealer would leave the penny in the trunk, and forget to put it under the carpet. And to think after years of lurking on this sight I thought you knew everything.
