Artist Michel de Broin is the creator of this pedal-powered 1986 Buick Regal art car,
outfitted with 4 independent pedal and gear mechanisms.

This was an art piece that was being exhibited at the Mercer Union Gallery.

The video was taken in downtown Toronto, Canada, when they decided to take to take out for a spin.
All was going well until the cops pulled these guys over for dangerous pedaling.

The funny part is that the cop wanted to look under the hood for some strange reason,
unfortunately for them they could not produce an engine and the right paperwork.

And in the end were stuck with an expensive towing bill...

    November 21, 2007:

"Today Baldwin appeared before a judge and entered a plea of not guilty.
A trial has been set for the third of April, at 3pm.
The court will have to argue that the Shared Propulsion Car is more dangerous than other vehicles on the road
(bicycles, unicycles, roller-skates, rickshaws, skateboards and other muscle-powered vehicles, in addition to automobiles).

In the last 50 years 200,000 Canadians have died in car accidents.
No pedal-car deaths have been reported.

Mercer Union and artist Michel de Broin would like to invite you to join us on April 3rd, in courtroom R at 60 Queen Street West, at 3pm.
Seating is limited, so please arrive early.

With the expectation of winning the right to operate the vehicle on the streets of Toronto, the artwork will be towed to Old City Hall on the morning of April 3rd.
We hope to leave the courthouse in victory, and slowly pedal home."

I think the argument is it's not a motor vehicle, so plates/insurance/etc isn't required, much like a bicycle. If you put fairings on a bicycle would you now have to register it like a Harley? Me thinks not. Now I'm not legal counsel or anything, and know even less about Canadian laws, but because it outwardly "looks like an automobile" doesn't necessarily make it one IMO. Granted yous guys in New Yawk play by a way different set of rules on many things compared to us Ohio corn cobs.... :)

This is no different from the big bike except the car was a lot smaller. Maybe they should have taken the body off....

the beer wagon doesnt resemble an automobile...the hipster "art" car does..he deserves every fine they can throw at him...

i like how he is inviting everyone to come and share the experience of the court room...why? gonna riot if he doesnt get his way?

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Case was dismissed. That said, I would install some decent lights on it for the safety of the riders.
