Hmmm I do seem to remember the distributor gear being the last thing on the nose . . .

Thanks both for the pictures! Er, I'm assuming the 2nd one is correct, can anyone confirm? I did just order a 1970 Chassis Manual (can't believe it took me this long haha).

    Patrick,
That last pic is from the 71 service manual.

    Awesome, thanks Mart!!

Does anyone have any opinion on which distributor gear I should use? (see pictures above)

Thanks a million for chiming in Mart, I looked at that pic I had about ten times this morning, thinking, “that don’t look right” so I checked my 71 service manual and could not find a pic, I’m glad you jumped in;)

Either one looks ok to use.
The bevel doesnt do anything. Look at the wear on middle area of teeth. Use the least worn one.

Chipped out teeth are a no no, and grooved eccentrics like these.:D

i just had time to read. looks really good. you doing a good job. i am also converting to a sniper system.
You have a lot of similar parts : turbos, Surge tanks, manifolds, my cam is a scott brown but not completely specd for turbos since i got itwhen i build the motor NA.
I have ported Iron heads which doesn't matter to much since you will FORCE the air into the heads anyways.
Sorry we never meet in person when i was still living in your Area.

Are you planing any suspension upgrades?

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying guys!! ;)

I'm sad when never met up either! Did you move somewhere else?

The plan for my Skylark is to run it on the road course/HPDE eventually, so suspension and braking upgrades are a must! Probably going to go tubular stuff all around, been reading through threads like these:

    http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/ultimate-a-body-suspension.214132/

I have an SRE Road Race oil pan getting made for me, going to be one of the most expensive things on my car haha, but oil control is mucho important for the road course!

Glad to hear that we can both test out the Sniper system for forced induction. I'm thinking of going with the new X-FLow system. You?

Yes i moved to Dallas TX.
Work & live took me out there...and i dont regret it yet :)

I have everything sitting here since january. i went with the SUPER SNIPER 4 inj. + Hyperspark Distributor (for Buick SBB) and coil So i can control the timing completly...Mark Burton runs the same on his and his sons turbo Sbbs.

With your RobbMc Surge tank you have the fuel system already sorted out this works great with the Sniper.

This has a 2.5 MAP sensor ( round about max 21 psi boost) integrated already so more than enough boost possible.
The good thing is also its Boost and N/A usable. so its anyways a upgrade to your old carb especially with the timing control

here is a good source and great customer service, Chris is very patient and will explain you everything.

I got the system from him to support a small business, Summit has enough of our $ already :)

Just dropped $1,268 on parts from TA :

    -SP3 Single Plane Intake Manifold
    -TA High Flow Water Pump
    -TA HD Complete Rocker Kit
    -Viton Valve Stem Seals
    -TA Head Stud Kit
    -Stage 1 Valve Springs
    -New Retainers
    -New Keepers
-Water Pump Pulley Stainless Bolt Kit

Hoping this will be almost all I need to run the engine on that stand, but I'm sure it's not :p

I had to mock up the turbo kit to make sure my SRE oil pan will clear, Steve's making it as we speak and sent me some in progress pictures! Also got some glory shots of the turbo setup:

Got the heads reassembled with the old valve springs (for cam break in) and cleaned valves. Put them on with the new ARP head studs and got them torqued. The Fel-Pro composite head gaskets seem to block all of the water ports except the very front and back, I'm assuming that is by design?

    Here are some pictures:

My valve guides were already cut down to 1/2" so I installed TA's Viton valve seals. Old vs new:

Also got a chance to mock up the SP3, it looks KICKA$$!!

tbdOXIN_LI.jpg The #2 exhaust tube where it merges with the header looks like its going to have a hard time getting the exhaust out, seems like #4, 6 and 8 are going to "push back"

It's true that a full equal length tubular turbo manifold would be better, but these are Mark Burton's pieces and it seems that people have had decent luck with them. Maybe I can upgrade designs down the road?

If you could join the #2 exhaust to the up pipe to the turbo BY ITSELF, Im thinking that would be far better.
Similar to how Buick did the Turbo 6, go with the flow, not against it. IMG_0580.JPG

I'm pretty sure Sean mentioned that he got a tubular set of Buick 350 turbo manifolds made? Hopefully he has some pictures he can share!

Got some more work done today! First off, timing cover and water pump installed:

All these new parts make that greasy block even uglier! Can't wait to paint it.

Since I bought nice Poston Valve covers I have been looking around for a nice oil cap solution. I wanted something that was as cool as the covers, and finally I decided to adapt a "Monza" style flip top fuel cap to serve the purpose!

Here is the adapter mount that I bought for the cap:

    And the cap:

After a careful makeover with a cutoff wheel I had just the threaded part left. I tack welded a ground down fender washer inside, then drilled mounting and oil fill holes:

Not my most precise metal work I'll admit, luckily no one will see the bottom! Then I copied that pattern onto the valve cover:

A Neoprene fender washer from my local hardware store serves at the perfect sized gasket:

    Pattern copied again:

    Finished result!!

The coolness factor was definitely worth it: (video of operation)
