Interested in the opinions of all you experienced parts sellers and buyers:

Scenario: Seller advertises part (on another board) "in great condition". We make a deal for part shipped; I send a check. Part arrives, obviously damaged. I message seller, say I'm willing to pay return shipping but I want my money back, so we each will have paid one way. He says no problem. I say send check to this address. No contact or delivery for weeks. I message where's check, he says "waiting for my part".

I've been buying and selling parts for years, never encountered this before. In my experience, money always precedes shipment. Part now belongs to me, right? Shouldn't refund precede shipment?

We won't go into whether seller is messaging like a d----.

You usually have to send the part back before you get a refund in most situations

It's a bitch on these kind of things. V8 board has been great. When I buy on Evilbay I always use my credit card on paypal as I believe my credit card will protect me better than Evilbay or Paypal. When you deal person to person you are out there, and depend on their honesty. Some are honest and others.......

Sure, I agree, you send the part back TRACKED and wait. Then if no $ you tell him you will out him on the site. You can usually tell a person's rep by looking at how much they sell.

Unfortunately this is the downside of being self-insured. Weight your options carefully I would recommend a quick phone chat so you can make a call on who your dealing with. Had an issue with issue a x-box on EBay. Would have been better off not returning it.

There is also the option of threatening turning them in to USPS if thats how it was shipped. Got screwed years ago on a parts buy. Lost my $, but the guy went to jail.

In same/similar type cases I have always had to return the item before refund is issued.

I would return it "signature required", then you have proof he got it.

Many years ago, purchased a "nos 67 interior rear view mirror" from a fellow on west coast. Received a repop mirror in an original part box.Asked for refund. Sent mirror back. Result? No mirror. No refund. No return calls. Predated widespread internet. I try to use credit card (PayPal tied to card,NOT bank account)for the protections afforded.

Sadly, not knowing the dollar amount, I would think it is best to chalk it up, Post who this seller is and move forward. Or even not post who this individual is and move forward. The stress of trying to get your money back isn't worth the hassle. You aren't dealing with a big box store.

    Life is TOO short.

It is your obligation to send the part before refund is given, sometimes a seller will send refund if you send them the shipping tracking number showing the part was sent. Returning a part for refund from an individual is the same steps as if you were returning to a retailer, no refund until they get the item back. If the item was misrepresented I woukd not have offered to pay the shipping back.

I sold a THM 400 some years ago. A week later I got a call that the tranny was no good. I told him to bring it back and I'd refund his money. He brought it back and left in on my driveway where I could see it. I gave him his money back. Later that day I went out and looked carefully and discovered that it was a THM 400, but not the one that I had sold him. "Trust but verify" - Ronald Reagan.

I had that happen with a power top motor for the Centurion I sold on eBay, I had tested on the car and worked flawlessly, got a message that it was DOA, ebay refunded him as soon as he provided them the tracking number. When it arrived it was not even a question that it was not the same one, even took it up the chain at eBay showing them pictures of the returned item and told them to compare them to the pictures on eBay, they still sided for the buyer.

That's why I hate Ebay; they always side with the buyer - always.

So I sent it back to him first, USPS signature required. He says "why would you make it harder than it has to be"; delivery attempt on 1/7 (not home), and he has made no effort to pick it up. Needless to say, no refund made.

Where do these people come from?
