Painting steering wheel, epoxy paint best?

Hi folks, I am going to paint a dark blue 67 A body (Skylark/GS) steering wheel to be Apple red for the recently acquired GS400 convertible. The red steering wheel in the car has cracks as most of them do and I would rather use the blue one that is in almost NOS condition.

So, looking for recommendations on paint to use on the plastic steering wheel. Would epoxy be the best and perhaps a clear coat? I would probably roughen the surface with 400 grit wet sand before painting. Not sure if I need a primer of some kind?

    Welcome all suggestions,

    Thanks,

There was an episode on Powernation several year ago when they restored a '73 buick. I think they repaired the dashpad & the steering wheel.

Went to English Color paint shop late today and discussed all the advice I found on Google and other sites. We walked through the process and they were very helpful on the steps to take IE: primers, base color and then recommended a clear coat. They can make any color and put it in a rattle can to use. I will be going back to them between Christmas and New Years and buy the products needed and get started on painting the NOS wheel I have. Will document the process and report back here.

Painted mine with DuPont (interior) paint ready to spray no hardneror reducer.
And it is white. Never touch with dirty hands. Prep’ n correct is key
