After selling everyone all those 3D printed sport mirror gaskets, I finally had time to get my mirrors painted and put on my 71 350 GS. I'm not a painter and I just used a rattle can but I did wet sand and polish them a bit. The car had some nasty huge base plate chrome mirrors on it that I took off. They left an area way bigger than the sport mirror gasket would cover so I wet sanded and buffed it out as best I could. It isn't perfect but then again this is a driver quality car. You can see from the buff rag how oxidized the old 1980s paint is. I even made a template for drilling a hole in a perfectly good door panel from my 70 Stage 1 car. Not sure if it is exactly correct but it fits in the hole in the inner door skin so I'm calling it a win. I was also short a trim clip that holds the mirror remote to the surround. I made one from an old spring I had laying around. It works for now. And now for the pictures. Here's what I started with. I also know what the original color looked like now. I'm glad it is red now. Painted. Buffing the door and mirrors, notice the contrasting shades. Mirrors mounted. Now is a good time to point out the aftermarket Camaro brackets I bought did not fit as well as my original 1974 mirror brackets I got out of a junkyard in 1980. I had to tweak them a bit for optimal fit. The driver side was spot on.
Then I tackled the door panel and remote surround. I hate cutting up a perfectly good door panel but a 19mm hole saw didn't do too much damage. Be careful of the stitching. I nearly unraveled the stuff. Here's the template I made from the 70 door panel. Then the cutting and drilling began. Measure twice cut once. Finished product!
