You can take a 1998 4l60 and put the whole drive train except the pump and put it in a 1990 case 700r4 . You can t do that with a 200. I just dont think they can hang too long in a built up 455. The GN im pretty sure is a lot lighter than a 68 Riv. If you pick up a 1968 Riv and run accross your garage, Then pick up a 87 GN and run accross your garage. The Riv is gonna hurt your back a little more. Gm makes a pretty high output corvett. with a 4l60 , 700. I would not put a 700 in a GN,

They will actually. There's quite a few BBC 67-72 chevy trucks that run them cause of the ease of bolt in. Weight is more than a rivi. The most powerful vette to run a 60e made 250 hp. Most powerful incarnation was a 65e behind 350-400hp ie the gto Camaro and the ss trucks/suvs.

I don't know what my builder does (he tells me but it is all waa..waa...waa to me) but I run a 200-4r. Motor is a supercharged 455 in a 70 Skylark, 3:73 gears, Nitto drag radials and an Edge 9.5 converter. Car weighs 4000 pounds.

Silly as this sounds, my Regal has had a 700r4 in it for the last twenty years. That said the 2004r is light years ahead of what it was in the late eighties. So is the 700r4/4l60e. If you are into an adapter plate, the misnomer that broken tv cables are common, or that you need a 3.06 first gear with a jump to second, by all means hit the 700r4.

The other side is the 2004r. Still has a deep first gear, much better spacing the overdrive, and plenty of parts to make it live, and the fact that you don't need the adapter. Not sure why you think it cant "hang" but you are entitled to your opinion. Riv is probably 1200 lbs heavier.

I don't see why the fact that dropping the 4l60e stuff into a 700r4 case has any bearing but it is your choice. I guess that is a plus but not really sure why. The 2004r stuff fits from most years, the early diesel stuff with the hydraulic lack up isnt nifty but there are plenty of other better choices for a starting point. I will say the five pinion stuff from a 4l65e and the updated stuff is strong. Get the factory stuff not the aftermarket. The aftermarket five pinion planetary isn't as strong as the factory four pinion pieces. look for the escalade and GMC denali for the "fancy" pieces.

Like my dad used to tell me, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

thats a sweet LaSabre . I think its hard for me to go with the 200 because I have built plenty of both of them, the 700 and the 200. None for all out race cars though. But some strong street machines. The 200 eds I have built actually went into camaroes. or what they came in stock. The torque of my motor overcomes the wide gap from first to second, but the 200 would be better in that respect , being the torque would be applied more to the pavement for a couple seconds but that evens out. 3rd is the same, advantage in 4th goes to the 700, slightly taller lower rpm at cruise. I hammer the hell out of the car daily for the most part, until connecting rod broke. I broke a planet ounce but went to the 5 pinion china planet and it has been solid, after 8 yrs the overdrive was slipping on full throttle and the rev drum got dished so i had no full throttle second . I drove full throttle to work , at lunch and home.

Hey nick white, and you other buick nuts......ive got a 1970 buick lesabre 455 and was wondering other than the initial cost of the built 2004r what am i looking at. I've heard that i wont have to move my crossmember but that i will need to shorten my drive shaft or find a junkyard swap or get one custom built and possibly something regarding the tranny yoke. Also possible dumb question but because im new to this kinda work what's involved as far as the sift linkage i.e how will my column shift linkage mate up to the tranny. and any other cost or install info would be greatly appreciated

Not sure if this is aimed at me but ill take a stab with what I know.

32 spline output on your th400 so you will need a 27 spline yoke to mate up to a th2004r. I'm not sure on the shorten the drive shaft but I am sure it will need the length altered to work. The shift linkage should go together but you won't be able to pull it all the way to first because of the extra posistion for overdrive. I think there are kits to modify the column but I've never looked into it.

You should upgrade your 2004r with some pump mods like hard rings, larger boost valves, slide spring, enlarging the drainback. Tou also should get a hard stator support and Sun shell. Starting with a newly overhauled unit is preferable.

The tv cable is the most important part of the swap. It is imperative to set it up correctly. Tvmadeez.com bowtieoverdrives.com read up on it. It is very important.

I'm a Newby with a Wagoneer with a Buick heartbeat so last week I did a lot of reading and phone calls soooo I would do what they said and use the 200-4R because if that tranny can take bracket racing it could handle 65mpr on the freeway............ Allan.
