OPG seat foams ??

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by David Gramlow, Feb 10, 2003.

  1. Has anyone used OPGI for 68-72 bucket seat foams? Year One only lists "replacement foams that may need alterations", for the 68-72 models, while they have "correct reproductions" for older buckets, and for all bench seats. Year One is also $139 while OPGI is about $90/set. Can anyone comment from experience?

Dave, last year at the GS Nats, I bought seat foam from Legendary for my 70 and a friends 71 and they are different. I can't see the difference . Just be carefull, cheaper isn,t alway good. Duane may be the best person to answer this.

  3. Thanks Bill. I will look into the Legendary options too. I wanted to use my Year One 20% off card for seat foams from YO, but they don't list "correct repros" for the newer models (68-72), only the "alterations required" versions. Even 20% off YO is still more than OPGI price. OPGI calls theirs "accurate reproductions" and "exact contours are incorporated"... BUT, also states "some 68-72 cars had solid foam, while others had springs on the back. Check your seats before ordering... I haven't taken my seats apart yet. Do you know if they would have been solid foam? They are original from a 68 GS400 buckets car. Duane?

Year One gets their stuff from Legendary so if you are planning on buying them from Year One your better or getting them from Legendary just to save on the fee`s and stuff.

    Thanks

    seat foams

the seat foams from year one have a trough cut out of them which is meant for those seat covers that have straps that can be pushed thru the foam and tied to the seat spring or jute .
the 67-69 camaros have covers like this .

  6. Not completely true, George...Legendary just now told me that they do not supply the foams for Year One. Just the covers. In fact, Legendary does not make the foams, they buy them elsewhere. Legendary is $140/set, while I can get YO foams for about $111. Legendary would not match Year One's current 20% discount offer. I'm still looking for opinions about OPGI foams???

oh ok David, but since we are on this topic i wanted to ask if a seat is mushy is that from the seat foam or the springs?

    Thanks

  8. I would think "mushy" would be from the springs needing replacement. On the old bucket seats that I bought last fall, the bottom foam is FLAT. There is no contour on the sides at all. I expect I will need to replace them, especially since the foam is half-ways falling out of one of the seat backs...and had sat in a barn for 20yrs. I'm not going to buy anything more than the covers I just got from Year One, until I have a chance to dismantle the seats, and see what I've got to work with. I'm also contemplating having a local upholstery shop do the work, although I would prefer to save their labor charges and do it myself.

    Guys, you just hit a nerve. If you want to know;
I'll tell you what I think about reproduction seat foams. When I had my upholstery business running I NEVER used them period. My seat covers were made to fit on ORIGINAL seat cushions, not what someone else thought those cushions were supposed to look like. If a customer used repro cushions I would not guarantee they would fit.
A few times customers brought in seat covers with repro foam cushions and wanted me to install them.

One was a set for a 64 corvette. I cut off 2 full inches from the bottoms and the seats still fit like the skin on a tomato. If that guy ever farted it would have blown him through the windshield.

Another was a set of 80-82 Corvette clam-shell seats. The covers were made to fit on "their" reproduction foams, NOT the originals. Well the customer didn't purchase the repro foams and when I tried to put them on they fit like bags. We then called the manufacturer and he said, "Oh, they are never going to fit.", and when we asked to purchase a set of repro cushions he said "We will not have any repro foams for at least 2 months." I ended up building "Bumps" into the cushions, and then added padding to the entire cushions to make the seat covers fit. These are just 2 examples I remember, there were also other problems with chevy/olds/buick/pontiac a-body seat cushions.

I always repaired original seat cushions and used them. Sometimes the repairs were massive, but it worked better for me.

I also get a kick out of people thinking they can use any 69-72 GM bucket seat and put whatever seat design they want on it. Many of the seats (Tops especially) need cushions that are unique to that design. I bailed out many customers that threw out their original seat cushions, to repaint their seat frames, and found out the new cushions wouldn't work. Many times they ended up "Buying" original cushions from me to fix their problem.

You guys can do what you want, I don't know how bad your seats are, but some of the guys working at trim shops are pretty good at fixing cushions. That is my opinion, you asked.

Duane, whats your opinion on a mushy seat?what would cause that?spring?cushion?

    Thanks

  11. Duane, thanks a million for your expert advice! :Smarty: That's the kind of info I was looking for. I will take my seats to a local upholstery shop that was recommended to me, WITH the cushions, before I consider buying any replacements. I am concerned about one of the seat backs though. The cover is split and there is exposed cushion, been that way in a barn for several years. I'll let a shop decide if they can salvage it or not. :TU:

    George,
When you take apart front seats that are "Mushy" you generally find that some of the springs are broken. These springs are made of hardened Spring steel and are therefore brittle. I used to take springs from rear seats, front bench seats, etc, and either replace or back-up the broken front springs. Once the new covers were installed the seats felt like a million bucks.
Cushions, sometimes called seat foams, only serve 2 purposes, they give padding between the springs and your body, and give the seat covers the "Correct" 3-D shape they need to fit properly. That is why they are important.
