Check out some of the stuff this guy has- incredible collection. He owns the Mopar site I mentioned. On a side note- in the last couple weeks, he bought an '80s Buick GN. Its getting some tweeking done to it right now & he doesn't have pics yet.

Well I do not want to throw a wrench in here but here goes . I am a firefighter and my captain was telling me about a high school friend that had a 440 4spd roadrunner in high school and it was still in his mom's garage . I went to look and it was a non matching no 383 car with trunk and 1 quarter showing rust , not running , the paint was flaking off , originally B5 blue now black with silver stripes . The interior was moldy and bench seats . I offered 3000.00 for it without it running and as is condition .
Heres the real part of the deal that'l grab you . My captain and this guy both know another classmate that has a Daytona , as we were talking MOPAR you know that other language ! This guys name comes up . The guy selling the roadrunner states that he still has the Daytona and its still in a Garage less than a mile from the engine house !! Of course it is wrecked in the front and been sitting for 20 years but it is still there and the conversation goes to the value and the Roadrunner owner says he talked to the guy not long ago about it and discussed the price it would be sold for I almost sh__ ! 20K and not a penny less .
So should I go for it ? I think it depends how bad it is as I have seen these sell for a large range in prices from 40K up to 120K
I imagine if a person had a Hemi car with documentation it would be a 150 K car but I have not seen them sell personally , they seem to be bid up high and never meet the reserve . They also seem to always have a private auction

My opinion here......that's just plain too much money for any car. Especially one that even though that particular body style is rare, it is kinda ugly..... and Road Runners are all around. At least they look good.

I'd take the 50 grand and get something nice that's also rare and fix that up instead...... and use the money left over to add onto my house or something.

You could go nuts on a GSx with 50 G's and probably run out of things to do to it before you ever spent that much. And it's a faster car.:bglasses:

Anything you want to sell is only worth as much as a buyer is willing to pay. Thats what it all boils down to.

Superbirds are the "Holy Grail" of the Mopar world. To own one that is an original #'s matching car is next to holiness to them. Even a clone is a big deal to them. As long as someone doesn't try to pass it off as a factory one, that is.

But back to the eBay car that got this started- thats a sought after car in the Mopar world. Its can be saved, but for far more than its worth I'm sure. But if someone spent the $$$$$$ on it, they would have the famed winged car that sat near the track for so long. Is that worth the money spent? If the buyer sees it that way, then yes it is.

    Jimmy,

That is a fact! When I was fourteen years old in 1980, I had a friend whose two older brothers went through thirteen '68-'70 Roadrunners in two years! He once told me that the most they ever paid for one was $800.00. :Dou:

The last one they owned was a 1970 with Pistol Grip. The orange beast was full of bondo as I was about to find out. One sunny summer afternoon I was riding my ten speed alongside that same friend who was busy delivering the Pittsburgh Press. Our "across the yard" conversation must have been good because I ran right into the back of his brother's parked Orange RR. I hit so hard my face planted into the top of the decklid and the bike seat came over and hit me in the back of the head. My two brake handles made perfect circles in the bondoed rear trunklid! Fortunately for me, his brothers never found out how the damage came to be. My friend promised me if they did I would be dead...:spank:

    There were two Superbirds but no Daytonas in the area I grew up in. They were Yellow and Blue and by the early eighties they were both nearly junk. The blue one had aftermarket wheels and the yellow one lost its snoot in an accident. {That must have been commonplace}

The Superbird's had one of the best musclecar ads:

It's hard to believe that hulk once looked like this!

95% complete? Maybe that much is gone due to rust...Henry is right, I am not sure the seller is from our planet.

The seller has been busy on this machine instead of the 'bird turd.

I've been to Daytona for the 500. The ocean is right there. Perhaps the 'bird was located close by the speedway, but just off shore. Alas, the 'bird turd would have to have been dipped in rust because the Bismarck even looks better and she was blasted for hours before being lost. Gee, I wonder what you could get for the Bismarck if you had TWO build sheets:Do No:

    Old Cars in Barns pictures

I went back and found the old Cars in Barns pictures. They are actually better shots of a car in slightly better shape.

I suppose these pictures rule out my off shore theory....:Brow:

    It's the trophy

The condition of the car is not the issue here. It's the thrill of the hunt, to see the trophy, a legend, a piece of history sitting out in plain view but yet totally off limits to the ones who want to claim they caught what has eluded everyone else. It's to be able to say "it's mine".
Or I could be wrong and the guy who is bidding on it may just have had tinted glass in his incubator.
Really, I used to have a nice 64 Polara and let me tell you these Mopar guys are serious about their rides. They live and breathe dog dish hub caps.

Yeah, I think that black one was moved into the garage!!...after 20 years outside I don't think it will make a big difference now..lol, get this, I was asking about these cars and such....this guys mom and dad have all their service work done here, Tom does it, and he said that this same guy has 2 Hemi engines (complete...he says he has seen them himself) in the garage also....could they belong to the 2 Birds?...hum, first time I see his dad or the guy himself I'm gonna ask about these cars.

those pics brian posted of the space ship make me want to:laugh: the rust pics make me want to :ball: i can see it now, instead of cars in barns, space ships in barns. that salt air sure does take its toll. hard to imagine that car once looked like that nice pic. to give another example of what rare parts cost for mopar, take a look at ebay item number 2454951873 a dana rear for an E body, it ended over $ 3K plus shipping which would add a good bit to the total cost. the buyer of the axle is complaining on the ebay motors bb that he got ripped off on the freight. myself, i would never bid with a seller who has 13 private fb with an 81% positive rating, just asking for trouble. study the fb before bidding.

    Re: It's the trophy

What you say is true for many folks. It is the ugliest side of the hobby and the reason some of these cars are as rare as they are. The owner just wants to be the "owner" even if the car is rotting to pieces. It is selfish and childish.

This car is so far gone it is falling apart! If you notice the rear of the car is completely out of wack compared to the older "Cars in Barns" shots. No doubt this is due to moving the "corpse" around. In the eBay auction the seller notes, "...needing careful handling....". This 'bird turd is a cadaver and collecting it is a sign of illness. This is like someone wanting to be with Marilyn Monroe, just so he can say he was with her. Yep, dig her up but please use caution because she needs "careful handling" after all these years.

Necrophilia is a terrible thing. Leave the dead alone. This car needs a proper burial and not a "restoration". Even if someone were to pour the $$$$ to her and make her look like a Superbird again, so little of her will be original that it will inevitably and ultimately be an imposter.

As for Mopar guys being serious, I know that. They have a stout following and a neat variety of cars to collect. However, and this is just one Buick guy's opinion, this auction crosses the line of common sense and decency. Selling someone this 'bird turd is sad. Anyone interested in a former actresses leg?
