What oil are you guys using?Weight? How's your distibutor gear livin'? Mainly want to hear from guys with stock oil pumps or the "SCAVENGER"system,Thanks.
Hi Gary, i use 10W30 RED LINE, & 10W40, with hi volume pump. went through the engine after 8 years of driving & racing, dist. gear shows NO wear. Gary Paine builds all my engines, he installs the gear oiler, i'm sure it helps. P.S. i have never ever had a problem running the big pump either! Randy
I run 5w-30 mobil 1 with 1/2 quart of Kendal 40 mixed in for my hydrolic lifters. Runs a little quicker then 10-30 and seems to drain faster. The Kendal leaves a little film on the bearings between weekends and my lifters dont bleed down. Had the dist. out a few weeks ago after 14K miles of street strip duty and no where visible with the 70PSI pump.
Gary, As you know we do run the scavange system that AMP is now selling. Yesterday dad pulled the engine apart to find the bearings looking ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. This is after 136 passes (that were in the log book, probably more) with each pass at or just over 7000 rpms. As for the oil..... We usually run a Kendal 20/50 oil. I know there are others who will say this is much to thick but G&G set our bearing clearances at .0025 on the rods and just over and .00325 on the mains. By the way... I do agree with the larger bearing clearances if your able to supply the VOLUME of oil necessary. Good Luck
Hi Guys, I have been running castrol gtx 20/50 in a well built street/strip GS455. I notice a lot of people are running 10/30 or 10/40.What is the difference, should I change? Thanks:beer
I've been using the Valvoline Max Life in the 10w-40. It seems to work well, but I change the oil/filter every 3000 miles anyway.:TU:
I have always used Valvoline 20w50 racing oil.....since 1976. I have never had an oil related problem. When you tear the engine down to change a cam or ports heads...whatever, the inside of the engine is literally sparkling clean. I also never drive the car when its under about 55*, usually at least 70* before I will get it out, so that comes into play too. I sure wouldn't want to go crankin' on the 'ol GS when its 20* with 20w50 though!:eek2: I change the oil once a year right now, since it sits in a garage 5 months out of the year without being run.
