As some of you may or may not know, I had my 455 built & all of that good stuff.

I was going through my boxes they gave me, low & behold I have a tin circular disk in my box. After some research I determine its my oil slinger & most say to put it on. So I take apart my front cover today to put it on.

I believe I have it on the correct way, however I just wanted to verify that I do. Looks correct from pictures on here & the web.

    Thanks,

    Kyle

Looks right to me. Make sure you prime the oil pump to verify you have oil pressure.

    Thanks fellas! Will do.

Also in regards to my windage tray....They seem to have left that off as well. I also see it’s like a 50/50 take it or leave it on the tray.

The motor is already in the car so I won’t be dropping the pan. I was just wondering the overall consensus on the tray.

This will not be a heavily raced car.

    Thanks again,

    Kyle

I would put it on. You can drop the pan in the car.

The oil slinger only goes that way,as if it was in the other way,it would hit the timing chain.Like John ,I would also put in the vintage tray, not a bad job to do.Bruno.

Why is this YOUR problem that YOU have to deal with?

Why aren't the idiots you hired to build the engine not correcting their own mistakes?

At minimum, make sure they refund you all the money for gaskets, and a reasonable amount for your labor, and post who did the work so others can avoid them.

    Schurkey,

As I totally agree with what you said, part of it is also my fault. I gave them the benefit of the doubt as they seemed to have done decent work from my research. A lot of the stuff in the boxes were things from the donor engine I no longer needed.

I didn’t really delve much into the boxes until just recently. So that’s a bad on my end. Engine was done almost 6 months ago so it seems a bit iffy for me to try & bring this up now. Plus at least if I know that I did it I know it’s done right.

I’ll chalk it up to me not making the best choice in engine builders. We’ll call that a life lesson. As long as the internals hold up at least I’m getting to a knowledge point with these motors that I can tackle any further issues myself.

So the Windsge tray in the box wasn’t from the donor parts? Are you sure they didn’t put one on the built engine?

I’m pretty sure the windage was from the same engine. I took them the engine whole. I never disassembled the motor before the build. Not sure where another windage tray would’ve come from.

Now when I say “extra parts box” I mean like old bolts since I used all new, wire harness that was from old car, old cruise control set up & things like that. Believe the motor was from a big Buick.

Why not get an endoscope??? They ONLY cost about $10.00-$14.00. Then when you go to change the oil you can put in into the hole from the drain plug & look inside. Easier than pulling the pan & costs about the same as a pan gasket.

That seems like a man excellent idea Tom.

I know that it is a Buick windage tray for sure though. I was the only Buick in the shop that I know of. So that really makes me think it’s the windage tray from the motor I brought in.

Wouldn’t make sense to try to install it(if it was omitted) until the first oil change anyway. This motor hasn’t been run since the dyno session.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over the windage tray being or not being in there

What year is the 455 you had built?
Buick stopped using windage trays starting in '73 or '74
There may be no provisions for one.

    1973.

I have a windage tray that I got back. Not sure where else that would’ve come from.

I’m also not fully sold on putting it back in ruining gaskets & having to tear off pan now that motor is installed.

When yah change oil next, stick a poker in the drain hole and if you hear a “ tink tink tink” sound it’s in there.
If you don’t have one it’s not a big deal

Is the oil slinger just there if you are using a rope seal in timing cover?

The oil slinger goes in regardless of seal type

With the front cover still off you can get the scope in to see if they installed a wind age tray. Or maybe just call the builder and see..

I'd be more worried in my mind if they were too stupid to slide the slinger on, or easily bolt 3 tiny bolts on for the tray, what else are they too stupid to do.

From my experience if ppl cant the simple stuff right, they can't get the hard stuff right. Its not like ours is the only motor in the world to use these parts.......and if they took it apart, they should know they were there
