This may be a dumb question , but I am going to ask anyway.. will an engine be able to pull the same vacuum using a cork gasket vs a rubberized gasket? Is one gasket better than the other? I am talking in the 10 -12 " range... any info is greatly appreciated... Timmy

Tim, are you using a vacuum pump or headers to pull cranck case pressure? The gasket material for the oil pan has not been an issue for me, it's a matter of preference. I've used both in the past and I have learned the important thing is having good flat surfaces to get a good seal. Everything including the dipstick must be sealed tight to get a vacuum. How many inches are you getting now vs when you first added the evacuation set up? I'm at 10-11 inches under hard acceleration and see 3 inches at idle with a GZ pump. The other thing that is important is front and rear seal, they must seal tight or the vacuum reading will be low.

Thanks for the info, I have been using a cork gasket and thought a rubber gasket would be easier to clean up during rebuilds. It pulled 11" before I parked it in 2009 and I am getting the ole pig back out to make a run at the 9's.. I am overhauling the engine right now and was thinking of making a few minor changes while I had it out. The vacuum pump is a Peterson wet vac that I have been using since 1998.. Just sent the pump back so it will be fresh.. I will be honing the block so ring seal hopefully wont be an issue either. Thanks again Timmy

I've have good results with a cork gasket / Ultra Gray combo. Almost 17" on my new engine.

Tim, get that 'ole pig" back together and let's go to BG. We are looking forward on seeing you! Talk to Gary and Brian and Steve Steele get them to come out, lets make a reunion of the GSE old timers. Mike Nusell is trying to get Keith Smith back out too.
