Yeah some in floor radiant heat sure would make a job like that much easier. Especially when you're down on your hands and knees. But some people are so stubborn in there ways lol.

Agreed Jim... Been listening and heeding his advice! I wished the floor was heated but it tis what it tis. Tomorrow I'm gonna set a thermo-meter on the ground to see what the thermocline/convection line looks like.

Just about at the 99% stage of hand sanding with wet 600. I now not only dont have fingernails left, but several fingers are stumps LOL. If the car were three feet in the air it would be a cake walk. For now its' elbows and buttocks. Tomorrow I'm sterilizing the O.R. for the influx of Buickitis Virus patients, or is that patience?? ws

Got my extra quart of CC yesterday, and until then, Ive been detail wet sanding me arse off. Got my extreme exhaust fan set up, wiped the whole car down with dewaxer stuff and got 3-4 coats of color on the repairs, then a good full coat down both sides from the fender top edges on down to the rockers. No tiger stripes here!

The hood and roof were perfect so they didnt get any color. Im gonna need to wipe down the minimal overspray dust with the dewaxer. Should I wipe down the color as well? EXSPURTS??? The color laid down nice and flat and the dust wipes off without much effort. This guy is gonna look bad to the bone. ws

No, do not wipe on the basecoat with anything wet. I just lightly go over it with a tack rag and lay down the clearcoat.

Thanks Bill! The paint co. instructions say to lay down a thin (CC) "sticky" coat (.5 mil), let it flash, then one full wet coat (2.0 mil). How much is too much, or too little?? No reducer either; just the CC and the hardener @ 2:1 Last time I made it look wet and that was way too much! After 10 minutes I got the "runs" LOL... TIA... ws

It will spray much more flat if you reduce it 1/2 part

If you mix say 14oz clear and 7oz of activator then put 2 to 3oz. Of mid temp reducer

The reason you were having dry base to tack off was the fast reducer with that heavy metallic,.should have used a slow or mid temp reducer

You will need to move faster and possibly increase your distance but it will lay much smoother

The way I teach the kids is SODA
    Speed
    Overlap
    Distance
    Angle

watch and adjust the above as necessary while spraying

The clearcoat that I use is mixed 4 to 1 (CC/activator). I have never reduced it and I even looked at the tech sheet this morning and there is no mention of reducing it. Not to say you can’t, just that its probably not recommended. It lays down so nice that it reduces the color sanding time significantly. Every painter I know has their own method of spraying product and I firmly believe there is no right or wrong, just whatever works for you. Since you’re new at this, experiment on some scrap pieces. What air pressure are you using at the gun? I typically use 35-40psi but again, a little experimentation will save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run.

Alot of the 4:1 clears don't need to be reduced generally the 2:1 stuff is THICK

But you'll never see a manufacturer recommend adding reducer as it will change the VOC

Thanks guys! I got a reply from the mfgr. on this stuff about reducing. Their whole answer was "Yes, the clear coat needs to be mixed with the hardener". What a bogus answer. I guess since I got an early start (its 0900) Ill mix up a small batch and try it as recommended, then ad some reducer to the cup and shoot that side by side. I just didnt want to cross brands and have a negative reaction.

The other recommendation was to pull the plastic screen out of the cup bottom. Im really careful about using clean mixing pots and strain the incoming products through a 190 micron(?) strainer. The regular paint store jobs anyway. Today Im gonna take my time and get it right! Even another new furnace filter! Even with the exhaust fan going yesterday, a decent amount of the color was airborne enough to get upstairs to the heater intake and turn it blue. Im taking no prisoners this time! ws

Yes take the plastic cup filter out that's what the strainer is for,...but no they aren't and technically can't tell you to reduce it

I'm going to suggest to let it sit for a few weeks tho,..you have ALOT of trapped solvent as it is,..I hate to be all doom and gloom but you are going to have cracking ..lifting and swelling in the very near future

Best I can tell there is around 15 coats of different material so far,??

"I'm drinkin' doubles, but she's thinkin' single..." That SODA thing was going through my head all day and it worked! Thanks Ethan! Everything went off without a hitch except two small spots where I ran out of reach and kept the gun running... Uh Oh! Two very minor runs that can easily be dealt with. The rest is pretty dang magnificent.

    Actually, heres the wind up
OEM finish mostly sanded down to previous body work and bare steel
Rattle can black primer as I moved along, longboarding to reveal any errors
Black mostly sanded down to accept a 2X catalyzed primer
Primer well sanded to about #400
    Base coat well covered
Clear coat too heavy with runs
Sanded CC down to a nice 600-800
Touched up 1/4 panel to the door and a nice blend coat the entire length
    Sticky coat applied with SODA
30 minute wait for a nice wet coat using the SODA as well

All in all it turned out swell. Tomorrow I may start pulling the rugs for R&R and then the hood and stuff this weekend. Thanks for the advice! I owe ya a Coke! ws

Thanks guys! I need to forward some "factoids" that may be of interest to some and altho I'd rather light the pot, I feel the need to help stir this one.

Pats in Missouri with her kids and G kids. So she makes it from Beloit Wi. to St Louis Mo. for fuel stops. Her friend up here was at the doctors office yesterday and asked "Have you been out of the country in the last 30 days or been to Illinois?" Hmmm Another friend of the D-I-L is in the national Guard in Mo. The DIL asked her point blank if she's heard anything about any kind of Martial Law being instituted. She fell silent for a minute, and then replied "Be prepared to take care of your own". That was a bit unsettling. You didnt hear that here. ws

Yesterday a friend of mine that grew up in Illinois, showed me a video that a friend of his that lives in Illinois sent him. It was 4+ minutes long and it was of a long train load of military vehicles headed into Chicago...……….. Somethings up...…..without question. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3278479632181081&id=100000572295016

Looks like you may have ample time to get the paint job finished as we'll all possibly be stuck at home for a while. I've got plenty work to catch up on myself!!!!

Looking pretty nice for a home brewed paint job Bill!
