Don't you want the louver openings to face forward so cool air will be forced in under the hood? Or are they already, its hard to tell?
Naw, at the bottom of the windshield is a low pressure area (wind tunnel test results). The louvers face to the rear and the hot air is drafted out; that is, if I cut holes through the hood.
Oh, so they would in theory pull cool air from under the car to under the hood and out the vents? Cool, I like it.
Just hoping the asphalt isnt 150F! Yeah, those Pontiac SD 455 Trash Cans and Cowl Induction SS chevelles used that low pressure theory. Ram air faced the back. Didnt some one here do some E.T. comps with a GS hood; intact and blocked off with no difference?
Yeah, I don't think the GS hood helps anything but the looks. I like when the air cleaner is attached to the firewall to grab the air from the cowl area your '64 has between the hood and windshield, just need to make sure the leaves are cleaned off when you go racing. That area I think is suppose to be a good spot to grab the air from too.
So the big guy got the car in primer, then sanded it, then touched it up, then sanded it again, and gave it a full rich coat of primer before a wet sand tomorrow, with my blessings! I think he misses the beach haha. He grounded me from the shop. Too much smoke, dust and fumes raise H-E-double hockey sticks with my COPD. Maybe some color after the wet sand, or maybe Saturday. Swap Meet Sunday in West Bend, Wi. Gonna pick up another 75.00 star wars air cleaner again...
You look after what's left of your lungs Pat! COPD ain't no joke, when I was told by an A&E doctor i might have it and i asked what it was she told me with all the tact of an axe murderer "put it this way, I'd rather die of cancer " Last test I had was last year and came back with the lungs of an 83 year old. I'm 53 and it's made me think about what I expose myself to. I'm sure Bill well knows but tell him to keeeep sanding - it will be awesome by the time he's happy with it. He's inspiring me to get stuck into mine once the speedway season is over
Hey pat, can you find out what kind of paint is Bill going to use? And here is an example of the cowl intake I was referring to;
Its really rare to see a true INTACT cowl induction unit. Everyone thinks its just the hood. There was those, and the one you show had the vacuum operated door on the top of the hood. Being a 427, was that in a '68 chevelle SS? The BC/CC thats getting used is from these guys. Went with the "best" CC they provide for an extra 100.00 The primer was some British stuff left over from a boat job about 5 years ago. The guys have pretty decent feedback... https://www.paintforcars.com/ This is the primer PDF: https://www.egc-coatings.com/files/20281/egc21-TDS-EN
That mustve been a '68 also. Hmm... The '69 used the same style as the 70-71 did (I'd include the '72s with A.I.R. compressor notched out). Betcha its fun trying to find that joint "sock"...
The only 427 that was factory installed in a Chevelle was in the `69 COPO. There were many dealers who built SS427 Chevelles so the common misconception is that they were factory built. Not so. The one in the picture posted here is either a `66 or `67, but again, the 427 was not available from the factory in those cars.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/252002903452?lgeo=1&vectorid=229466&rmvSB=true The car in the pic is either a 66 or 67 Shovel(Chevelle)? If the cowl intake is factory, not finding any 427 cars let alone with that intake yet.
I was judging by looking at the firewall/cowl area. Could be earlier but not later than `67. I don't believe the cowl air cleaner was factory installed but I have no solid info on that. So often back then those items were dealer installed or simply an over the counter item.
At Sundays' swap meet, I picked up a new (not in the box) jitterbug sander for 19.00. The deal of the day. Plus a 1970 Nova washer bottle and fender bracket for 10.00. Its not correct but Im not blowing 50.00++ for and OEM repop thats the wrong color. Got a few smalls at 1.00 each too. So I get the sander home, and give it the air. It buzzes once and stalls.. I give it a few drops of 3 in 1 oil and it takes off. Great. Get the hood and complete passenger side done with wet 320 and it looks great in just 2 hours. On my way out the door, the daylight hits it just right and notice a little warpage just above the rear tire opening. The following day that, plus another spot got some attention on the back of the 1/4 panel. That was all smashed in, and the repair looked "OK". Hey, so while I'm in there hahaha... Opened up the whole deal and made the fix and got to shoot some more primer outa the 9.99 gun. Kind of a wasted day, but I'm this far ya know... An hour to clean the gun and its ready for another day. Confidence is building on the HVLP system! Maybe some color in the next few days. Gotta finish up the drivers side today... Sure glad Willy is sitting right there showing me how to do this! So at first ya dont even see it, then theyre gone...
From Sunday... The OEM washer bottle had to be worth at LEAST 10.00, and the chinajitterbug for 19.00? New with zero tax? Also picked up a vintage 1964 Mobil Gas State road map for a buck. Cant beat that with a stick; or even an automatic! Got the entire car sanded with 320 wet yesterday. I think its gonna be fine. View attachment 463140
Dang Pat, Bill is really slave driving you to get this done it sounds like! If you get tired wet sanding just tell him no more and make him let you take a break!
That guy had me standing on a ladder shooting base coat all day long yesterday. We started at 0800 and finished cleaning the gun at 1445 hrs. Darn am I underpaid or what?? The job turned out pretty nice. I'll give it a 99 and a few minor fixes today before the clear. Thats the advantage of the BC/CC system. The base flashes off and we couldve repaired the blems yesterday, but will be just as easy today. Let us Pray... Pretty interesting stuff that the overspray on the roof (two short arms haha) merely wiped off with a painters rag after 15 minutes. I sure hope the clear is as forgiving.
