I love the look of the air cleaner. Will the hood close on it ok?

Air cleaner looks good, my friend. Finned aluminum is tough to beat. Riv is running a "batwing" knockoff, but if it wasn't I'd have an aluminum job on there too.

Yeah... that chinacleaner will definitely have the hood close on it. Hmmm. Looks like going topless is gonna be en vogue this summer. I hope the LEO's can appreciate that! This thing sitting on top of that edelhauser reminds me of a velocity stack! I may need to fab up a lowering base next year. A good winter project! I hate to chop a hole in the nice time capsule hood, but a nice 70 SS chevelle cowl induction hood would look good ICHO. (In Chinamans Humble Opinions), or an unobtanium 64 special glass hood. Maybe a clear plexi job; Burick unda Grass with extaaaa gaahlic. ws

Bill, will a regular old drop base 14" not work for some reason? Even under the Riv's hood, which I can almost guarantee is lower than your 'lark's, I got that big old batwing to fit with a drop base and some careful fitting.........

Yeah... but you have that baby BBB in there. I always liked them bat wing jobs too. The stock 455 AC wouldve almost made it with a slimmer element. The bottom sits quite a bit lower than this. That edelhauser has/needs a one inch spacer adapter under it for the quadrajet intake too. That's gonna be gone next year too. ws

What kind of base are you using or tried to used with the stock cleaner? It looks like just the stock bottom. One of these bases would probably do the trick with either the stock air cleaner or get a full set-up with a drop. I run a drop base on the Mach 1, Caddy, and Riv for hood clearance problems. The Mach is a massive engine in a tiny engine compartment with a low hood. With a standard base the whole air cleaner was over the fenders. You can barely see the carburetor when you have one on.

YUP! The finned job really needs a dropped base! The carb ring is about 1/2" tall PLUS the frame and filter on top of that. The biggest problem is the oval air filter element. Gotta go! Chickens done! ws

Still cooking along I see, Bill!
Sorry to hear about all your issues with the master cylinder. I bought mine and the power booster through Steve Carouso here on v8. Never had a problem with either one.
Installed my new gas tank Tuesday that I got through ThePartsPlace. The neck was soldered proper and fit in the same location as the original. Tank is made out of what looks like heavy duty galvanized coating, smooth and like original. Spectra Premium tank, made in Canada. Bought new pad for the top from PSGlade on v8 also. New mounting straps from Inline Tube. Very happy with all these parts.
Hope you get everything straightened out and ready to roll.
I like the way the OEM style air cleaner looks on your engine myself, but the finned one is cool too. Definitely don't look like the hood is closing without some kind of modification. But I also know you'll come up with a cure for that one after seeing some of the other stuff you have pulled off!

WOW! Two Mikes, no waiting LOL... The whole OEM fuel system was good except the piping and pump. The tank was just cruddy inside. the straps look like new. If anyone wants the stinky OEM tank, its theirs for the shipping. Itll clean up, but i just went new to avoid all the BS in cleaning this one.

TM MIke... That and the DIGICKLE seats is pretty cool. The guys a real character aint he? Reminds me of a "family" guy in Chicago that wanted to belong to a "club"; he could butcher words like iggernant, and mudder flower... Bill

They were actually in yesterday. I couldve at least had the pass. side valve cover back on today. Im getting an early start tomorrow... The lone rocker button is already on. Its a MELLING, hecho en china. Note the new signature rine here?? This hobby is really going down the pipes to the river!!!

So on the advice of a fellow 2nd generation (1965) Skylark colleague, We are coming to the conclusion that a 1964 and a 1965 hood are interchangeable. Hmmm... I know the fenders and core supports are different and THOUGHT the hoods were as well. I have a near perfect (sans patina) 1964 hood and dont really want to hack an air cleaner hole in it especially if its got ONEYEAR-ITUS.

The two top pics are mine and the next three are a 1965 GS I was looking at but too much $$$. Neat car though... AC and a 4 speed to boot! The last one is a 65 with a 455 that seems to "fit". Thoughts? Ideas??

If both years fit, that doubles the odds of finding a spare. Some where along the line, someone posted a pic of the differences. Anyone care to field this one? Any input is appreciated! ws

They look different to me Bill. The center of the hood between the style lines are raised on the '65 and inverted on the '64, just like the bumpers between the two. '64 is "smiling" and '65 is "frowning". Maybe the '65 hood may give you slightly more clearance with the center section bulged like that.

64 and 65 hoods are Identical. Do doubt in my mind...…..absolutely positive!! My second vehicle was a 65 Gran Sport and I knew from swapping stuff back then (45 years ago!!) that the hoods are the same, along with the doors, rear quarters and deck lid. Gran Sport frames were "boxed" which made them different, but regular Skylarks for 64/65 share the same frame also. The only real difference comes in the front of the vehicle...… bumper, grill core support, fenders, along with little trinkets in the interior...… dash surround, glove box door and key, etc. And of course the tail lights are different on 64/65 Skylarks, but I think maybe the Specials shared some taillight components.

Yep, it's an optical illusion in your pics Bill. After studying other online pics, I see that I was seeing things. Sorry 'bout that!

Thats OK Nick! Ive had my paws on a few and couldnt tell the difference; pretty subtle if any! Ill rely on those with hands on 'sperience fer sure! Sometimes just a break in the sheet metal for a bodyline definition can change and throw the whole thing off. ws
