Been a while since I've seen one of those...looks pretty good!
The Q-jet should work, I'd prefer an older one and definitely a pre-emissions one, but in a pinch, it will work just fine. If it spins bearings, it might be too rich? (washing walls?) I don't know for sure, never did do much with Pontiacs except tune them and wreck them.

Happy hunting Bill! If you see one of those things I've been looking for, and it's NOS, perfect shape and only $1.00, please scoop one up for me. Buy another for yourself, too. My treat.....

Yachtsmanbill started out with a $200 JBL speaker. I took it back last week. He took this one out of the bedroom and refuses to give it back. I re-programmed the ones in the house to recognize my voice as Bill just listens to music AND (get this) tells google to put rock gut rum on my shopping list. I was at the store last night and saw it on my list. I kid you not.

Followed Jim W's advice and plugged the non-used 430 OHV oil passage. Thats the one that causes external oil leaks next to the distributor. Plays house for a while and cleaned the block with gun brushes, then blew clean, and cleaned some more, before inserting upper bearing shells in block with a dab of Lucas (!) assembly lube to spin the crank. It felt goo-ood!

Checked ALL the ring gaps and taped them into individual packs for assembly.

Motor mounts may be here today, so I can do a block/trans /frame mock up before that bastard starts getting heavy! Its tuff alone.

Probably iced-out for the West Bend Swapmeet today. thats two in a row. The Beer Gods must be pissed off! ws

Soooo, some stuff came in at CrackAuto today. Ya hafta understand the girl that works there is wayy less than pleasant, is 5'-2'' X 5'2" and an I.Q. of, you guessed it, 5 2. I dread dealing with her, some of the guys arent much better, but the napa in town has "Game boy" behind the counter and cant look up from his lap ap tab tap thing. "Aint got it...". Then the Carquest across the street has the owners wife behind the counter with permamnent scowl marks and doesnt understand the difference between metric and standard. Thats my story and I'm stickin' with it!

Managed to get my 2 new motor mounts today, both made in the Gulag and of course, one had the big bolt holes off by about 3/16"... Back to see Peaches. Did get a rear main seal from a number that Terry gave me and it fits... off of a 6 banger Ford. It'll probably leak anyway... just rejection of being installed in a Buick.

Talked to Afton (!) at T/A today about frame pad positioning. Mock up was the term she used. I used a ruler instead. I measured of the Z bart to the mount on that side at 12-1/2" to the bolt center. Snugged the pad down and it layed right in at 12-1/2" . Ill be dipped in doggy doo-doo. The other side looked way off; of course. Some stick ruler work confirmed the Motor Mounts on the block are indeed staggered. Whooda thunk?? Bolted the R pad down and the difference was ..... 1". Exactly the difference on the block.

Meanwhile I was listening to Rocker Arm Radio...

Anyone up for some tranny porn??? ws

Bill, that whole deal from bell housing to the yoke looks long. Is that my imagination? You'll have to have a driveshaft made?

Its all done with smoke and mirrors Frank. The 4 speed is exactly one inch longer than the three speed was. Its a Chevelle sized T-10. The mount on the back is circa 1964 as well. If Air China can get me the other mount tomorrow, Im gonna have this guy sitting on the mounts and crossmember (hopefully frame holes will line up) and then get started on cutting the floor for the hump job. The front seat, door sills and rug is coming out to get the hole right. Im gonna make my own custom stalk for the shifter too. No one has ever given me an answer to what the Hurst unit Ive got is from. Hmmm.

The trans is going in bolted to the block. Im giving myself ONE mock up run, the pulling it out (!) and beginning the assembly. Parts should be showing up by then too.

After the stuff goes in for a final, Ill measure a "for sure" number on the DS length. The inch will probably come out from the front end of it with a fitted sleeve with a center stop ring, maybe 4" o.a. to keep it all lined up. Thats one advantage to having a lathe anyway. For welding, probably 3-4 pcs. of angle iron secured with a HD pair of chain vise grips and a ton of tack welds and away we go! Lotsa checking before, during and after! We're back to having to do everything myself, old school, thats kewl!
Ill do a video of the shaft on my precision balancer too. The best part is when the judges pick it apart and I ask them " Who did your$$?? ". ws

Well, managed to get the mock up setting on three mounts. Really no different than rigging a 150 ton turbine spindle to turn it and get it out the door on a railroad flat car. just a tad disappointed on the Z bar alignment, but we'll work on that tomorrow... crossmember lined up on the oem holes on the frame. that in itself was a relief! ws

JACKPOT! Just some musings from today. Located and drilled the shifter center hole. Humps a lousy fit. Im just going with the boot and ring.
Got the ass. manual. Its a poor Xerox copy X3, bound left handed to boot. Tomorrow Ill cut the hole and pull the mock up (MU) back out. ws

Ho hummmm...Got the new COMPLETE clutch kit from ebay yesterday. The disc, plate, TO bearing, alignment tool and a dab of spline grease with FREE delivery in 3 days for 98.00 Made in Canadia. All the bolt centers measured up so it should fit.

Worked on the hump hole for the M/U and finished with the boot and ring. Shifter is all hooked up and it glides through the gears. Had to hack the junk off the stalk and re-drill it and it worked out fine.

With all this done, its all gotta come apart to pull the blank out and start assembly. Progress feels good. ws

Its a breeze Marc! Just like someone came over and did it. Ya know all this stuff broken down into little pieces was all assembled by half-wits on an assembly line. Everybody there knew one or two jobs. We caretakers (undertakers LOL?) hafta figure out what they were thinking 50 years ago, and re-figure it by todays standards.

Anyways, got the MU back out and on the stand. Dont forget this is by myself. All the sub assemblies fit just as I expected them to. Z bar, clutch and shifter linkage, motor and trans mounts etc. So it was all assembled and just "snugged" down in place. Final assembly will be for real, and I shouldnt hafta struggle mit it. Nicht Kampf! The biggest hassle is road dirt from under the car falling when its disturbed into the eyeballs.

This week is all doctors stuff. Labs and upper roto rooter for me today, docs for Pat tomorrow, the cataract surgery for her at 0700 Wednesday on the left eyeball with a glaucoma stent to relieve the pressure. Its the size of a sewing needle pin prick; probably in a metric size LOL.

Gonna get back on this guy Thursday. Right now theres #1 piston installed with no rings for degreeing the new cam and gears. Bearings are all perfect and it rolls beautifully. Installed the Ford rear seal a la J.W.s tutorial which went well and all the mains are down at 110 lbs. Piston height is .055" below the deck. Now I hafta digest all the cam numbers.

Theres 1-1/2* of crank dwell on #1 piston at TDC in both directions. That's on the homemade degree wheel. Im good with it so far.

USE THE JUICE LUKE !!! ws

Taking a few days off to help Pat out. Today was eyeball #1 for a cataract removal-lense replacement and a glaucoma stent for the pressure. The glaucoma occured in 2 months and partial destroyed the optic nerve with no chance of recovery. Vision is at 50% on the left eye. She was a 100%er and did fabulously! What a dang trooper that girl is!

On a sad note today, Alex Trebek announced he was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. WTF... No symptoms and about a 5% survival rate at that stage. In fashion true to form, he announced this and said he has to survive 3 more years to fulfill his contract for Jeopardy! ws
