I dragged out my black 71 GS out of storage and I have a starter, flywheel issue. happened a time or two last season. I chalked it up to a weak battery (I might of been in denial). It actually was weak. Im praying its not the flywheel. When its cranking its making an awful intermittent gear mesh noise. Like clashing gears. Whats odd is you dont even hear it on some start ups. Im hoping the starter is just busted. It wouldn't be the first time the nose cone broke or cracked on it. Its been due for a starter anyway since last year. The headers cooked it good so it wont start when it gets hot.

I just hope its not the flywheel, that's gonna be a real PITA. And what makes matters worse, is now I wont have any time to change it till next weekend. So I guess its going to be on my mind all week. Now I know what a little kid feels like that broke his favorite toy..:(

And on a side note, the brakes are shot. Last brake job on that car was 1993. Needs new pads, rotors and hoses (both of them are split). If I was smart, Id replace the calipers too. Rear wheel cylinders are leaking. Needs an oil change and diff service. A tune up might not be a bad idea since there is black overspray on the plugs. Which means they've been in there since the rebuild in 2009 (?). And both mufflers have gaping rot holes in them. Which is another issue.... The Walker mufflers I used are discontinued, so I have to find another set of 3" mufflers with a 20" case, 27" overall length and double in/out offsets or I'll have to start bending up a longer 3" head pipe. Looks like "the black car" is going to take up some of my time and money this year. The car really doesn't have a name, that's just what I call it. I called it a few other things this weekend though

On the bright side, the almost 30 year old paint job polished up really good. Not bad for an old lady

Check out the Dynomax #17547, it is an Ultra Flo. Appears they no longer make one in this configuration in a Super Turbo like you said.

Mike, looks like you nailed it. Dead on match for what I already have just in a smaller case. Im trying not to reinvent the wheel here. Im going to order a pair of those up. Im planning on ripping into it this weekend.

Larry- I have this thing about using extra clamps.

Jump out and mark the balancer everytime the starter doesn't engage. It'll be obvious quick.

I couldn't sleep last night. The starter thing was keeping me up. So after work I took the car back out and ripped the starter out. Thankfully, the flywheel looks good. I swapped in a new starter. I feel better! Now Im afraid to crank it! It was such a good day, I don't want to ruin it. I'll try and start it tomorrow!

On another note, I took the cover off the diff to change the fluid. Housing was dated by the place that set up the rear- Lizzard Racing. Its stamped "LR2494". So Feb 4th 1994. So the gear oil has been in there almost 25 years!

Next up is the brake job and the exhaust.

    Glad the flywheel was OK.
I just changed my diff gear oil Friday, after breaking in my new gears.

Started the car up today. I have to say, I was a little gun shy. No likes disappointment right? Took a breath and turned the key....What a difference! Smoooooth cranking. I cant believe how fast it spins now. What a relief. Got the rear diff filled up and gave it an oil change.

Still a bunch of work to do to get her back on her legs. 10 gallons of race fuel wouldn't hurt either

I took a hard look at the old Torque Tech exhaust that's on there. Incredibly, the pipes are still in great shape. So I ordered the Walker 17745 mufflers last night. You know Im gonna drive it around the neighborhood with open M/T's right? :D Anyone want to guess how many car alarms I set off?:D
