Anyone know of methods to reduce highway RPM for 4 speed cars? We love driving to events i.e. B/G Nats and Woodward Cruise but the 3.42 runs about 3000 rpm @ 65 more less. This years gas prices may prohibit much of that type distance driving. Any ideas?
I know exactly what you mean! Why not try a 5-speed (or 6-speed) transmission? - OR - I wonder how the car would react with a 3rd gear 1:1 ratio and the 4th gear say, a .67:1 ratio. Similar to the ratios in a 200R4. Has anyone tried it? Do they make gears to do this?
Which ones fit with the least amount of surgery? And of course cost is always a factor to be considered.
Prolly out this spring or summer: http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/28/6496.html?
Ed, You do know they make Gear Vendor Overdrives for 4 speed manual transmissions. They are pricey though. http://www.gearvendors.com/agmanual.html
I'm not sure if this would be an option you would consider if you're partial to a Muncie or T10. If you can find a Saginaw 3spd. with overdrive you can take the overdrive unit and bolt it on a Saginaw 4spd. and have a 5spd. Just an option.
Sounds as if the Muncie 5 speed is going to be worth the wait. The price looks comparable to the OD. Plus it should be a bolt in deal with shifter. I used to have a Saginaw 4 speed in my old 69 Goat. Didn't hold up to Pontiac torque so I could imagine the results behind a Stage One. Liberty gears was only about a mile from my house back then and rebuilt a M-22 for me but I digress (those were the good ol' days). Thanks to all for the advice/option list. If nothing else comes across I think I'll wait on the Muncie.
I work at a stock car track and trannys are getting hard to find so some of the guys are running ford 5 speeds out of 5.0 mustangs. Lighter and more plentiful? Just a thought?
Corvette T-10 with Doug Nash OD I bought an '87 Corvette T-10 with the Doug Nash 2 spd od attached. It will bolt into my 64 Skylark, but will move the shifter back about 3". The cross member will have to be moved and the OD will have to be plumbed to the radiator like a automatic for cooling. I'm still deciding if I want to do it. Karl
