Thanks for looking at my post. Moderators, if this is in the wrong section Please move it where it belongs, I wasn’t sure. I need help from all of you with far more Buick knowledge than I have. My car is a 70 GS455. It has bucket seats with a console. SO, I have 5 potentially different Locks/Keys. 1, Ignition. 2, Doors. 3, Trunk. 4, Glove Box. 5, Console. I know one key doesn’t do them all AND I know each doesn’t have it’s own key. So which are keyed alike and which (if any) are unique to themselves? Thanks For All Of The Feedback! Mark
The square key will fit the ignition switch and the doors. The round key will work the trunk and the glovebox. There's no lock on the center long console
Is the correct for 70-72 Buick? For Oldsmobile, they used the square key for the doors for 1970,but switched to the round key for 71-72. Both of my 70 GS cars have either had parts switched,or the locks are completely gone,so I don’t have anything for a reference. The 72 Skylark I just parted has a square key for the ignition,a different square key for the doors, and a round key for the trunk & glovebox. I know it should NOT have 3 different keys.
Thanks for the feedback buick64203. I haven’t payed much attention to my car in a while. I’m still in the process of research & hunting for parts. No console “keyed” lock is one less I’ll have to buy. Brian, thanks for your comments too. As you know my car is a 70, but if we can clear up this topic covering a number of model years then that’s just going to benefit others in the future.
You and I both want to buy the correct lock sets. There are a lot of vendors out there that claim that they are,and I am sure they will work, but we want them the way they should be.
Agreed Brian. I just looked in my 2017 copy of Original Parts Group catalog for lock sets. On page 249 is “Console Locks”. The description says that “these are identical replications of the factory Locks. An exceptional replacement”. There are 3 different part/item numbers listed. One is KK26070, this says it’s for 70-72. This catalog is Only for Skylark, GS, Special and GSX. If our cars didn’t come with locks on the console then I doubt anyone made an aftermarket lock hoping owners would want one. SO, could locks have come on GTO, 442 & Chevelle consoles and OPGI stuck it in this catalog not knowing that it wasn’t even an option??
Vader is as Jason describes: square key for the doors and ignition and round key for the glove box and trunk.
Thanks for all of the feedback guys. That’s what I’m gonna go with. Anyone have an idea about the OPGI replacement console lock that’s a correct replacement for a part that never existed??
OPGI doesn't know anything about Buicks...zero. There is no lock for the console. OPGI is talking from somewhere other than their mouth, Brian, if your Olds uses a round key for the door, its wrong. All GM's use a square key for the door up to 72. I forget when they went to the round key for the door but I think it was around 78 or so. If you want a very good locksmith, I use a guy in Georgia exclusively. A few of the guys on here have used him as well. Very knowledgeable. Knows his stuff.
Actually,it was an Oldsmobile thing. They made some change and used the round key starting in 71. I have owned over 40 70-72 Cutlass/442’s,and the originals that I had used the round key for the door, but my 1970 cars used the square key. Oldsmobile was also the only GM company that decided to use a flatter shade of black on the firewall. No idea why. Yes,The Olds consoles used the round key. Oldsmobile also had a unique-looking ignition cylinder for 69-70. I have a bunch of them.
Its actually a Fisher body thing. Look in your 1971 or 1972 Fisher body manual for the correct answer. It will tell you what keys were used where. According to the Fisher body manuals, up to 1973, the square (primary) key did the ignition and door locks. The 1974 manual states the round key did the doors.
