  1. STAGE III

STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

Doubt I will ever top the day I found the Experimental 455 4 bolt main X block, but there couldn't be but a handful of these laying around unaccounted for especially with a degenerate like me instead of being under a low production number high dollar concours car.

I know what it is but see how good you are. See if you can figure out what it is but be warned codes in some sources got it wrong.

Really excited!!! Gonna be AWESOME in my 70 4 speed GSX project!!!!! The factory painted code even matches my Saturn Yellow car heh heh! :3gears:

    Nice!

BTW I do know what it is. I have three of them. One has the same gear as yours, another has 4:88, and the last houses 4:56:TU:

Thanks buddy, it was in a 70 Chevelle and the guy wanted to switch to an 8.5 with 3:24's so it was just sitting. I asked him about the GS or GSX the rear-end came out of but he had no information from the previous owner. He even delivered it since I dont have a daily driver now! Still trying to find the post correcting the other inaccurate sources on the "ON"s actual ratio.

Would also like to find a source for other factory markings but is hard to find so far.

    40/11 is a 3.64 ratio.

I ran 4.11's in my blue '66 for the past 3 decades! Just swapped in a set of 3.42's. Not a huge difference, but a little better on the highway. Now I need to swap out the big ole Isky cam for something that matches the 3.42's better!

Yes, "O N" is the code for a 70 GS 8.2 rear, with 3.64 gears.

Standard in a 70 GS Stage 1 or GSX Stage 1, without AC.

    Good Find Fritz

ON is also the code for a 69 GS 8.2 rear with 3.64 gears....I believe also standard in a 69 GS Stage 1 without A.C.

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner! Thank you Jim!

One of only a 185 built size 8.2 3:64 geared non air conditioned, 4 SPEED, Stage 1 GSX or Stage 1 GS posi rear!!! :3gears::3gears:

Yes Sir, was a crazy and very very fortunate find! I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am to get this! I had to sell some parts to a friend that I swore I would never sell to get it but man o man after 46 years of this rear floating around lost to the Buick community I had to save it from being hidden underneath another non Buick car or possibly lost forever.

I was also very surprised that the 46 year old yellow painted code was still legible 46 years later! Only thing I wish was that I had a factory built Stage 1 4 speed car that this was correct for. I have been building my clone with as many correct smalls like gauges, steering wheel,GSX dash plaque(also from a real GSX and not a reproduction) etc etc but I NEVER expected to find this nearly impossible to find part without hardly even looking for it.
I am going to think very VERY hard before installing it in my car because like the Experimental block, there are just somethings that are just screaming for the right home especially if it was able to generate the significant amount my car needs to get finished, but then again I could use the rear and pull it if I ever sell my car and slide a Chevy 12 bolt a guy wants to swap me pistols for and just keep it forever till the day I find the correct car that deserves it.

Who knows but just over the top happy to have it!

Jim did you decode the casting numbers or date clocks to identify it as 1970, Sir?

Anywhere else I should look for factory paint markings? It is complete drum to drum so ready for more detective work for clues :TU:
