Okay, I drive my 'lark everyday, this just started not two nights ago after fillin 'er up. On light throttle it's fine, but once I go from there to half or even a bit more the thing just chuggs alone like I'm on not the pedal. Tonight I did a couple WOT passes at red lights and the thing just chuggs/hohumms along until around 30-35mph when it finally 'wakes up'. WTF? Less then a week ago I was amazed at how nice the tires were breakin loose on part throttle. Oh yea, on the last WOT pass tonight, the HOT light flickered on for a sec. what gives? Oils good, Trans fluid good, coolant okay. I even richened up the idle mix a bit, thought that might be it because it went from nice 60-70's here to high 80's last couple days. Tried the vac advance on manifold vac, poirted vac., same results. I told 'er tonight that I wouldn't drive 'er until I fixed 'er.. Soo... That leave me driving a rinky-dink Saturn 4cyl job.. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be the problem? I haven't checked the timming, but that'll get done first thing in the morning.

    Anyone? Help!!

    torque?

the key to your problem may be in the fact that u
just "filled her up with fuel" . did u happen to
get some contaminated gas , gas + water ?
had this happen twice many years ago ! water being denser that gas , falls to the bottom of th e tank & is pumped into the carb first . another solution could be that u filled up just after the fuel truck filled the underground tanks which in turn stirred all the settlings in the bottom of the tank . u then would have pumped a bunch of crap into your gas tank.

could be bad gas, but check your accelerator pump. with the motor off, take of the air cleaner lid, and look down the primaries, when you pull the throttle linkage you should see gas being squirted down the barrels... if not then you need to rebuild the carb

Gerry: Oddly enough, that seems to fit. At least the 'when it started' part.. I filled it up, and after about 10-15min driving I noticed the change.. Would a bottle of Dry Gas help? I really don't want to drop the tank to empty it.

72Lark: Stange but I didn't think of that. I checked today and she's shooting straight and hard..

I'll be checking the timing for sure tomorrow, I hope that's not the problem...

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks Guys!

    torque !

    scott:
    u can buy a bottle of 100% (99.98) isopropyl
alcohol and dump it in the tank . works as good as dry gas . accelerator pumps when they go, do so gradually (my experience from 2 previous qjets
    on a 70 chevelle 30 years ago) . dropping a tank,
full of gas, is not going to be easy . i do know
that if u remove the feeder hose to the fuel
pump, that gas flows out very quickly!

    darrenkp Love that Torque!

Sounds like bad gas to me too...I'd be checking the fuel filter before messing with the timing. After all, what could have happened in those 10-15 minutes after you filled up that would effect timing to that degree. It was right before you filled up, so it should still be right after you filled up.

    Thanks Guys!

I dumped a bottle of Pyroil Dry Gas in the tank last night and bounced the rear end a few times. I'll try 'er out tomorrow as I haven't had time to drive her in the last couple days. I have in inline clear fuel filter between pump and carb which looks fine. I hope it's just bad gas and the dry gas helps some. We'll know tmorrow! :)

I plan on driving most of it out tomorrow if I can, and replacing with a good stations fuel. If it is bad gas, then a warning should go out to anyone in the SFV area of LA. The (formerlly Arco, now Shell) station on Van Nuys and Moorpark should be avoided at all costs!

    Thanks again everyone!

    ???????

    Hey Guys,

I got out today to drive 'er a bit, but before doing so I proceeded to check things. What I foundout however I don't think is good news.. When I checked the timming, she was sittin ar ZERO! I always keep it at 12*.. So, hopefully you guys can help me, did my chain jump or my distrib move? A full 12* is quite a bit I would think. I reset it back to 12 and took 'er out. No more bog or ho-humming along, the powers back. But now I'm worried..

Is there an easy way to tell which moved? The chain or the distrib? Please tell me there is.... :ball:

    cyberbuck:
if the distributor is not tightened down enough
the whole distributor can move . can also jump
a tooth. if jumped a tooth on the timing chain
u might get it in time but the it will only be a
matter of time until greater problems occur.
