I'm starting this '73 350 for the first time, and I'm not seeing a timing reference mark on the water pump. I left it at around TDC when I put the heads on, so I know *about* where zero is, but what should I use to time off of? Thanks!
Yes. Some of the aftermarket timing covers do not come with the timing tabs, but usually have a spot here they can be attach. Original tab is built into the timing cover... left side of motor around 2 o'clock.
The timing tab is cast into the stock timing cover. Some replacement 350 covers had a bolt on timing tab. http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1341
No they don't for a 350. I have one on backorder for my 72 350 (lucky for me my timing indicator is removable from my car) and they say they are looking for a source that can supply them.
TA "carries" is more appropriate,..Any junk yard will have piles of 3.8s get on turbobuick.com and get one,..any them vendors will have plenty

You could technically just use any homemade bolt on pointer thing and timing tape right? Just line up with a piston stop to your new pointer and center the timing tape on your measured mark. Or am I thinking about this wrong?
