    Hi Gary,
I was wondering if you've ever done this same type of build up with a Tomahawk.
If so, how much more cost would you estimate with the aluminum block? Not trying to take away from what you've done here, been contemplating a Tomahawk.
I know the cost for the block is almost $6K and then you would have machining costs to get it ready.
Would you choose different components if using the aluminum block or would it be about the same?

    Thanks for your time,
    Philip T.

Gary, I am curious about the cooling because of the fill driving on long trips and around town .... and racing on a road course?

I have a short fill on my procharged motor and have driven it quite a ways on the street w/o issues. Never on long trips though. A good aluminum radiator and water pump are used. I don't know about road racing, I'm a straight line racer, maybe someone else on the board can respond on their cooling experience.

I would choose the same components, but you have a stronger foundation if ever you wanted to step up further with more hp or a solid roller cam. As built, a hydraulic roller cam is no problem,if you wanted to go solid roller cam additional work would need to be done to the lifter valley area.
If you're using a TA block from the get go ,cost would basically be about $6k, still need to align hone, bore and hone, and some other minor work.
Another thing to contemplate if going TA block is maybe going to 4.40 bore and using a Crower crank for even more stroke,of course the Crower is about another $3500 though.
And yes, I've done one TA block, went with a Crower crank with a 4.10" stroke and 4.40" bore for 500",with Oliver rods, 13.2 to 1 compression, solid roller cam.

    I street-drive a filled block. I also run a good oil cooler. It’s a 20-yr-old engine,and still doing fine.

Mr.Payne...could a more streetable version could be built for the street without the block girdle ? If the RPM are kept down, would the extra torque/displacement necessitate the girdle...? I bow to your wisdom, along with Jim's, or the Wizard's. Mr.Jay B.Britt,Jr. P.S. that's not to exclude anyone else's wisdom or experience.J.B.B.

I didn't want to bring this up till we were done, but we're currently machining a 482 with the exact same components in a non filled block. So if anyone is looking for a street type bruiser and concerned about a short fill this should be done in about 3 weeks, it would be about $200 less due to less labor and the fill material.

Rpm has alot to do with the necessity of the girdle, but due to the extra stroke I'd recommend the girdle even if not going with a fill.
Some have had success with the halo girdle instead of a full girdle. If I'm spending the money on the halo and machining the caps anyway, I believe in the full girdle. The cost isn't much different.

Thanks, Mr.Payne for all the info...it appears that I should have the 482 right with no shortcuts.
I need to start saving $$$ for my 482 shortblock the right way. Or send my parts and shortblock to You to get it done right. Thank you again, Mr.Paine.I'm still finding a use for that " 1050... Mr.Jay B.Britt,Jr.

If I supplied a core, what parts would you need? It’s currently 100% together.

Gary do you think the 482 cid short block without the fill would handle 725 hp without issues? Also when you mention short fill, how much are you talking? thanks in advance

I would be a little concerned anything over 700hp, the fill is at the freeze plugs. We can do a lower fill in the one we haven't finished yet if thats a concern.I just like at least some fill at the bottom of the block to strengthen it up at these hp levels.
