I recently ran across someone trying to sell an engine/transmission combo. He's not certain what car he took it out of, although he's pretty certain its a Nailhead (either 401 or 425), and that it came out of either a '63 or '64 Riviera. Here's the info. he was able to provide:

Casting #'s on top block in back are 1364705, #'s on heads are 1196914, #'s on intake are 1353241, #'s on trans are BJ-65-108264. Trans has 2 wire hook-up.

The block and head castings tell me its a 1964-1966, and either 401 or 425, but I can't find the other numbers. Most importantly, I'm trying to figure out whether the transmission is a TH400 and, if so, whether its a switch-pitch.

Can anyone help me out with this identification?

    Thanks so much.

all 425's have a rectangular boring boss on the upper part of the engine next to the trans housing. some blocks are coded improperly as 401's when they are 425's (according to dennis manner via buicks.net anyways).

as with the 400/430/455 family there should be a two letter code somewhere on the block.
    1964: KT=401 KW=425/4v KX=425/2x4v
    1965: LR=401GS LT=401 LW=425/4v LX=425/2x4v
    1966: MR=401GS MT=401 MW=425/4v MX=425/2x4v

gotta lurv them 442 guys, they have one heck of a FAQ system. note that the tranny should also tell you what year car you've got. check their tranny comparison page as well. can't believe i haven't seen that before...
