I will be re-assembling the rear end of my 71 Stage 1 in the next several weeks after I get the rear back from the powder coater. Can someone send me a couple of photos of the posi-rear guts and such? I want to compare it to the one I have. I am looking for the 3.42 gears. I will probably purchase a new one unless I find a good one from a board member.

    Thanks.

You mean sorta like what comes in a master kit?
    That sort of thing?
I've been aquiring parts for a 72 rear to swap into my car.

I am looking for a close-up of the carrier. I am not too concerned about the pinion gear or ring gear.

    Thanks.

The 8.5 posi carrier should be a Warner-Motive cone type in '71. Not a very good design for high hp longevity. Have whats left of one at the warehouse, will try & dig it out. If you're buying new 8.5 gears, best to go with US Gear-Strange.

Hmmm...I've thought I heard that the US Gear/Strange were more prone to have the whining sound when installed. I've always heard that Richmond was the gear to buy, not so?

    -US Gear-Strange
-Yukon gears from Randys (repkg'ed 8.5 US Gear)
    -US Gear-Torqueline gears

Are all high quality gears, set-up too many sets of all above with zero problems. I quit using Richmonds for 8.5 useage in the mid 90's when their construction changed. It is Richmond 8.5 gears that will give one fits for a quiet set-up, even if one has anally set-up 100's of sets of new gears.

To add to above list, I have not set up enough sets of Motive 8.5 gears for truly proper feedback. Numerous other builders have experienced good things with the Motive 8.5's & I will be using more of them as time rolls on.

The Yukon gears are made in India, som quailty control problems with the heat treat process. I had a friend use a set of Yukon gears and the pinion gear went away after 200 miles. Richmond is made in the USA.

The Yukon 8.5 gears I have set up were made by US Gear. Specifically quizzed the reps @ Randys before I ordered & set them up. Have had no problems with them. Not sure where Randy's is having them made today.

    Noisy US made Richmond 8.5's...
Have set-up close to 150 sets of new Richmond 8.5 gears & even after a super anal installation, myself & several other builders will no longer warrant them for quiet operation. The only ratio 8.5 gears I buy from Richmond are the 3.23's, & considering have a plentiful source for nice used GM 3.23's... I'd rather gamble with nice used.
