a while back i purchased this chevy silverado for only 400 dollars, its got a 6.5 turbo diesel which was blown at the time it has 200k miles but man its clean, bought a good 6.5 builder and had it rebuilt, i put the engine in myself hooked everything up and went to start the truck but it runs very very rough, stays on but smokes like a choo choo train, its white smoke, was thinking it might be the injectors or plugs, being a budget tow rig, i dont want to spend the money with a shop since i think it is a simple fuel/glow plug issue, have you guys had luck with these trucks any ideas. my idea was to have this truck as a towing truck for my car and my bros. thanks in advance.

I believe you need a GM type (Tech 2) scan tool to set the injector pump correctly if it has been off the engine. Expect multiple DTC's, along with other problems, to occur without setting the injector pump correctly.

I am only familiar with doing the procedure with a GM Tech 2 scan tool. Click HERE and scroll down to where it says "Timing the Electronic Pump". You want to do the "TDC Offset Learn" procedure. The article is for a Hummer, but it applies to your pump. I believe the author of the article is incorrect when he says the turbo engine is not adjustable. The procedure needs done on them also.

You aren't supposed to adjust the pump (if needed) with the engine running. Do the procedure, shut the engine off to adjust the pump, then repeat the "Offset Learn" procedure on the scan tool.
