I searched and found posts on the powertrax but they seem to go off track and it's taking forever to look through them. I've just gotten serious about upgrading my rear Differential and want to see if this is an option. Cheap, easy and fast are my requirments for this upgrade.

Can anyone tell me if this is the proper JEGS part number for the Powertrax unit
That will fit my stock 10 bolt 8.2 1970 GS455 3.42 open differential?

    754-92-0782-2801 Gear: 8.2 Spline: 28 (B.O.P. Differential)

    Rick,
Call Jegs or Summit, they should be able to tell you which one to order. I was installing mine today in my 85 T-Type and ran into some trouble....I'll be calling the tech line bright and early tomorrow! once I get it worked out I'll let you know what I think of it

Cheap easy and fast are what motivated them to make this. Not sure if it is what you want. I have heard good and bad.

well, I've got mine working now, it sure changes the driving characteristics of the car. I've only put about 10 miles on it so far and it's already smoothing out

it's getting better, the first few miles it sounded like it was exploding but there is a 50 mile break in period. I'm going to drive the car to work today to finish off the break in, I'll give you a report after that!

    Powertrax

What part number did you get and what problems did you have. I was just trying to put one in mine today and found out I must have the wrong part. They gave me the part number, this one it is too small to fit.

    power trax and lock right

These units are strong and mostly for straight line brute strength. Weekend warroir types. I use them alot and have had no problems with them. They do make some noise...but with anything you can not have it all. Posis have smooth quiet operation and some limits with the clutch and cones . You must always evaluate what you intend to do with the car , your drive needs and such. Then make your educated buy. Good luck with your new toy I am sure you will enjoy it. I used one in a 7.5 for years before upgrading the rear to a larger size and spool drag racing. Jim

Powertrax does not fit not 8.2

I just tried to install the part number 9207822801 into my 65 Riv, it did not fit. :af: It's probably the same application based on the info I have, 65-70 are supposed to be the same. Per Richmond they have it listed as a 8.2, I can't believe this has not come up with Richmond before. I talked their tech guy, he says there are no 8.2 with 12 bolt ring gears. He seams to think I have something other than stock and it's not. It's no 8.2 that is for sure, and don't listen to all the stuff about 10 bolt cover = 10 bolt rearend. Fact is, these things are not 8.2, I think it is a 9.376 and it's a 12 bolt I counted them, based on my research. :Smarty: I have got all kinds of wierd misleading info on this from it's a early Chev 8.2, 9.5, 8.765. I'm going to measure mine tonight to confirm the ring gear size because it's out and my car is sitting jacked up in the driveway. What I thought was going to be a 3 hour job max, is going to take a week now. :af: I don't want to run a spool, but if I can't get a unit like the powertrax I'll have to. My first rear end I blew the spider gears out. When I disassemble this one to modify it I was about one more hard launch from a catastrophic failure. The load is to much for the spider gears with the power and weight. When I figure this all out I'll post it. What is everyone else running????? :Do No:

    Don,
It was problems like these that made me decide to go with a complete rearend :spank: rebuild complete with a new posi unit. I'm only going to be out about $250 more than the powertrax unit. That is the same part number they quoted me for my stock original GS 8.2 open diff. That sucks. I wish you luck :TU:

Oh, and I love your car..That's one hot Riv!!!!!!! :3gears:

Thanks for the compliment. I like the the skkylark too, I've had a couple of skylark myself. I had an extra dual quad 425 and trans I threw in a 69, one day I hit a hard second gear only to shear all the lug off one wheel. Good thing I had wide tires and those low skirts. Was able to roll off the road without damaging anything. :3gears:

For anyone interested I measured the ring gear and it is 9.375. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next short of welding the spider gears. This rear end is hugmungous.

64 to 70 Riviera rear ends

Here is an update for those with 64 to 70 rivieras and possibly other fullsizes Buicks those years with dropout punkins. I'm working with Richmond right now to see if we can get a porwertrax or locker unit to fit. Right now short of welding the spiders, I have no reliable rear end to use. :Do No: I've wasted 2 now. This rear end is huge and it may be a derivetive of the early Old and Pontiac dropouts which there are parts for. :Brow: I'm keeping my fingers cross. When I find out I will tell all. :Brow:

    Don,
Educate me a little here, is there not a posi unit available for your diff? Do you have to go with a mini spool or powertrax? or do you want to avoid posi's?

I get my GS back today...John P. had the diff rebuilt with a new posi. After 24 years with an open rear I'm looking forward to some :3gears: action!!!!

Now my quest to do wheelies begins :Brow:

    Rick,
I got the Powertrax working great in my 8.5, the problem I had was that I couldn't get it to pass the test they describe in the instructions, once I got a better assistant to help me it worked like a champ and I buttoned it up and have been really happy with it, it is very smooth after 150 miles, not limited slip smooth but pretty good! I'm pleased with it.
