Im new here to this forum.
I purchased a project car and came with boxes and boxes of parts. There are parts from 5 or 6 cars. This project 68 chevelle came with an extra axle that looks better than the one thats already on the car.

The rear is missing its two axle shafts, retainer plate and end bearings.
I need to figure out what axles and bearings to get.

The number cast on the housing of the diff is: 1375689
    It is positraction.
    Its 55” wide
    It has 2.78 gear ratio
The bolts that hold the ring gear on are 11/16 heads.
The main caps have 11/16 heads.
On the drivers side rear axle tube is a stamped x inside a circle followed by 046 N
Any help would be much appreciated.

Contact Jim (Monzaz). He orders axles from Moser all the time. He can give you information you need. When I had my 8.5 built, I needed a pair of 30 spline axles, he gave me an invoice number that I had Moser reference. I just said, "give me a pair of these"

66-67 Buick 8.2” 10-bolt. It uses axles with a sealed bearing, and an inboard seal that presses into the tube. I have at least one shaft for this rear, with a new bearing on it.
    I might have a pair.

Plus the pinion seal is a 8620 which are much harder to find than the Pontiac 2043. ALL Pontiac 8.2 gears will fit the housing assembly with the correct posi carrier.
your axles are 28.75 long plus or minus a 1/8 - 1/16" I have heard people having 28 7/8" also. You definitely do not want shorter than 28.5 in that rear. It is consider the wider rear.
More likely it is a 1967 as it has the raised pockets for the springs....
If you show all the numbers on the gear which might have the date also. After the GMC on the ring what is there?

New axles can be purchased also I have those too.
I do not know if I have any long sealed bearings for that rear... I think I am out. Bearings always spun on them. :( Had to start using NEW axles and raising the price on the rears.

  10. Hi.
I could use two axles with the bearings in them. How much would you want?

    Thank you for the information.
I finally found some numbers on the axle tube. Drivers side bottom. Circle with an x in the middle. That means posi i think.

It was cast on the 32nd day,and finished on the 46th day.
    32 would be February 1st.
    46 would be February 15th
It has a cone style posi unit.

  15. Thank you.
Is there a link to see the date codes?

did you get the rest of the numbers on the ring gear?
Never seen a tube with the cross / x on it like that. Interesting.
drop out old Chevy third member drop out centers had the X in the early cases Positraction indication.... 57 ish era .

PM me on the axles... Do you want NEW or Used?
If I put the prices on the forum they stay there for years and then some one wants them 10 years down the road for that price...lol. :) Jim

There were no other numbers on the ring gear. Im on a budget. Used axles would be great. Everything i would need to just bolt the axles right in. Does it take retaining plates or do the drom brake backing plates hold them in?

  18. Are these the rear ends that blow up over 400hp?

One thing you NEED to do is take it completely apart and clean everything thoroughly.
