1972 GS 455 /400 turbo needs a shifter cable from console to trans. Cable appears stretched so it wont pull into L1. Tried the Parts Place to no avail. Any good vendors for this stuff? Bill in TR

    CALLING ALL EXSPURTS !!!!

Got my new cable and it matches exactly whats in the book; but its not even close to whats on the car... The shifter end of the cable is a spot on fit. The trunnion on the 400 turbo has a 1/4" pin that the cable eye goes on to and is retained with a jesus clip. To make a long story short, theres no way to adjust the cable/gear selector stops whatsoever. The shifter guts were really dry so they got some 40W and feel good. The removed cable is REALLY stiff to push/pull so I figure its gotta get changed anyway. The body grommet, instead of snapping into a fit, had a piece with 3 mounting holes (not used, just floating in place) which probably contributed to the dry/rusty shifter guts. I had to pull the shifter off the floor to pull the cable out from the inside. Is this maybe a cable/trunnion out of a Riviera???

So the big question is where the heck can I find the correct trunnion and shifting arm for the trans selector. I really don't care if the column indicator works; Im actually surprised that that part is still intact and works (really stiff as well).
If the shift selector needs to get changed, please tell me the trans doesn't hafta come out to do it! Bill in TR

Just a few more pics to help ID what the heck is going on... The grommet hole uses the snap in seal, and the one removed had a ring around it for 3 screws (not even drilled). Bill in TR

Just a few more pics to make sure everyone is good and bored. ME? Im just confused! The second pic shows wear on the "park" detent from the incorrect cable. The other detents show wear as well, but not soo much. The third pic shows most of the OEM column indicator linkage intact as designed. That trunnion on the trans is throwing me for a loop! ws

Well..I dunno IF i can help ya er not Bill... but I'll givet a whirl:

Lookin' at the pix of the cables above..in the second pix, the LOWER CABLE is correct for your car. Its the TRUNION that is wrong on the tranny. That bolt/nut with a stud and hole for cotter pin, is incorrect.

I dunno IF I have a correct trunion with set screw? Im sure Fred prolly does...

Once you get the correct trunion, the cable will slide thru and then you can adjust to find L1 on one end and Park on the other end.....

    Does this make sense?

ALSO...that pix with the grommets? well, the grommet with 3 holes is for a Chevelle.

ONE LAST THANG... you can replace every part to make your car correct WITHOUT removing the tranny!!!

Dang... the wires were frozen up here so Ive spent all afternoon trying to get on here. Tomorrow, Im gonna pull that dog off the trans and weld that hole shut, drill a new hole and make a trunnion. Theres an advantage to having a lathe here ya know? Did a bunch of research and found that cable and trans connect to "probably" be a chevelle indeed ! I just need to make sure theres room between the header and the trans dog to clear so the trunnion/cable doesn't get blazing hot from contact.

Heres some pics I grabbed off the net of chevy stuff... incorrectomundo... Let me know if you do find the right part tho; I am very interested! Bill

Like Wheelz stated, the trunion is not the right one.If Wheelz does not have the right one,a board member repops them, they are of good quality and you do not have to weld anything.BrunoD.

    ...one more notable....

TRY to place the trunion INSIDE or CLOSEST to the tranny side...allowing more clearance for the cable to be as far from the header heat as possible, gnome sayin?

I gotta admit it, that stuff looks SAWEET! One question, where the trunion goes into the arm, is there a plastic bushing with a spring clip like was used on the four speed rods, or is it metal to metal with a jesus clip (hairpin)? Now I hafta go talk to the finance manager LOL! Bill in TR
