When I built my 29 sedan I used the adapter from Marty worked perfect. I know He made some changes to his design sense I bought mine.

If you want a 6 speed go for it nothing better then shifting your own gears

I am running rubber mounts all the way around and still dont know why it broke. I dont think i am making enough power to split that trans.. i think i am making 600-650 ft tq. the orginal cross member is not in the car and i am thinking that the rear of the trans might be a 1/2 to high. i took some pictures last night of the split and posted them on my photobucket.
I hope he didnt close up shop because i am in the market for the adapter. I will be dropping the trans off at the welding this week and he said wouldnt be a issue to fix it. anyone ever weld up a cracked trans??

    The image is gone Paul.

I had a 67 ST 400 trans bell (BOP) welded up. It had been dropped and broken. It still lives as a TH 400 in a race car (SP removed).

went the welded route for the cracked transmission.. what do you guys think about welding some aluminum strips from the top of the bellhousing down to ad some strength??

As a precautionary measure it wouldn't hurt to have the extra strength Paul. Something other has caused this problem. Loose bolts??? SP/TH 400's are usually pretty stout H/Duty trans. Seldom do you hear of one breaking. Now if you have a trans. brake it DOES add much stress, but very seldom do the cases break. J & W DOESN"T make a "Super Bell" with the "Nail" bolt pattern & when I talked to them years ago they had absolutely no interest in doing one.

i was going to run a j&w and then a adapter plate. but due to price $1,000 for the kit and the j&w i had a friend tig it up nice. All the bolts where real tight.. dowls where perfect, does have a different crossmember that is one inch higher and supports weight of the engine alittle.. another weird thing, broke from right to left??? STRANGE.. dont get me wrong i was driving the car normal for me.. but holeshots and getting on it hard is normal to some people right???:3gears:

Paul, you have to think about what caused the stress that caused the case to crank in the 1st. place or else it may just happen again. My thoughts are that the left engine mount is NOT secured tight enough. The left side of the engine lifts much more than any other BECAUSE of the added torque, especially is you have traction. Can you see where I'm going with this??? Secure that mount with a chain & make it TIGHT.

i dont understand why is cracked from right to left, i would think left to right becaue the left was strapped down.what do you think tom??i added a ton more torque but i know guys that hit th400 with 1000ft lbs and no problems.i am scratching my bald head sitting on the couch and have no idea why this happened and dont feel like doing it again..

i will take a picture tomorrow when i go in the garage. i should also have the trans back so i will take some pictures of the fixed trans with the 3/16 plates welded on the bellhousing to help strengthen it up. i did find another small crack on the top of the bellhousing that was maybe 1/4 inch. i am wondering if the bellhousing had a crack in it and i didnt notice. i am surprised the tranny builder didnt notice it either. ohh well.. went to a local cruise night tonight in my 53 pickup and really want to take out the buick..

Tom, was cleaning the trans after it was all welded up and found a hairline crack right at the top of the bellhousing. Couldent see the hairline crack until i removed the paint off of it and really cleaned it good.the paint was covering the crack which makes me think it happened before i put the trans in. I am thinking this transmission may have got dropped or damage before i got it.. and i never notice the hairline cracks.. well i had a friend of mine tig up the large crack, the one at the top of the bellhousing, one around the dowel pin and one around the starter area. we added aluminum straps to add some strength if i have issues again i think i am going to change it over to a six speed tko600 stick car. i havent took any pictures yet of the welded up trans but will soon when i put it in.
