Last night my wife and myself smoked what we intend to be our last cigs. :gt:
Been taking Zyban for the last week.

The next couple of weeks are going to be interesting. I've stocked up on hard candy to take the place of having a smoke when the urge hits.(My Doctor will be happy, my dentist will be upset. ) I have cut a drinking straw to have in my fingers to replace having the cig.
    Drinking lots of water.

Any other former smokers have any helpful hints?

I've never even tried this before!
I started when I was 14 and am now 41.
    27 years! :eek2:
The thing is, and I know this sounds crazy is I always enjoyed it so much!
But with my Dad's family history of heart disease its something I should have done long ago. Not to mention everything else that is bad about them!
One motivator for me is the amount of money we won't be spending on the things.
We figured we averaged $255.00 a month for cigs.
So, I need to keep in mind how much more money I'll have to spend on the Riv! :Brow:
Ok, I gotta go get another piece of candy!

Why am I so freaking nervous about doing this?
Is it that I feel I'm giving up an old Freind?
I'm not one to fear failure, so I don't think thats it.
They say its more difficult to quit than cocaine, and well, like many of us back in the day, I played with that stuff and it was a bitch to get over that sh*t!
But I did it! and here I am 16 years later!

    I'm beginning to ramble,
Must find something useful, productive and distracting to do.

    Thanks for listening.

I quit a year and a half ago after smoking for 10yrs. I think the best thing to use personally was wintergreen lifesavers. As you know you get a taste in your month and you want a cigerette. well I would have a wintergreen, spearment lifesaver. this kinda help because at the time i smoked methols. but may help you also. I have also found that if your busy you tend to forget about the cigerettes. I had a hard time at first as i had friends that smoked. It was hard to work on the cars while friends were smoking but, I just kinda managed. Your wife is also trying to quit, don't let her have more b$%ls than you. I will admit i still like the smell of cigerette smoke, but stale smoke smells pretty nasty. If you smoke a pack a day you will save $120.00 a month. 1,440 per year. think of the go fast goodies you can buy with that. good luck, dale

    I did it too

I smoked for 7 years, 3 packs a day, and along with will power, the thing that helped me most was to find something I absolutely HATED smoking after. That one thing was milk... augh, the thought of smoking after having a glass of milk was absolutely disgusting. I kept milk with me all the time. :pp Also, I had to give up the things I liked smoking with(coffee, beer... etc) till I was in control again. All I can say now, is now I am the worlds biggest hippocrit! I cant stand smoking now, and I was like you, I gave it up after really enjoying smoking. It will be the best thing you can do for yourself. One thing I did with the money was instead of saving it for a project, I used it to better myself. I spent money on running shoues, and other equipment, and got myself in shape. It was much harder to think about smoking if I knew I was gonna reverse all the good I just did. Kinda like taking your Buick off road right after painting it......

Good luck to you, hope you do it!

    Dale,

I wish you all the best. I quit all sugar for about 4 months. Lost 20 lbs. Felt great. That was 2 years ago and now I eat a ton of sugar a day. All habits are tough to break.

    But...

You'll smell better. Your clothes will smell better. Your house and car will smell better.

You'll need to seriously scrub down the walls in your house and repaint. Replace all carpets. Scrub the cars.

My parents just dropped off a few pictures of the kids they took last month. The damn pictures stank so much I couldn't even look at them. That is just from the odor in their house. When we visit, even for an hour, I have to shower and give the kids baths when we return home.

It is the best thing you can do for yourself and those around you.

    Good Luck.

Hi Dale;- As a former smoker, I do not envy you right now. It will not be easy but the alternative is not as easy or as nice.

I quit on new years day 1990. My daughter and I were out snowmobiling and I was having trouble breathing. I would blow my nose and everything would be OK. When we got back to the cottage, my daughter said I should go to the hospital. I told her I was fine. I took off my snowmobile suit and I was soaking wet. An hour later I was at the hospital. Heart attack was the culprit. Can't smoke in an oxigen tent. Haven't since.

My wife went to Vegas with my daughter and took sick while down there. When she got home and was checked out, they found a spot on her lung. She had 1/3 of the right lung removed. She quit then and hasn't smoked since, That's over three years ago.

Wish you all the best, and hope that you make it.

Dale, Good luck!! I've gots to do the same. I started smoking around 13 -14 also. I hadn't been smoking for over two years when I met my new wife 4 years ago,but she was.(ended up being my non smoking downfall) I was also an anti smoking Nazi, told everyone how wrong it was to smoke, what it did to people around them,And the old I'LL NEVER SMOKE AGAIN!! guess what been smoking for the last year or so! All I'm saying is be strong, the urges will never go away but you can control them.
(or so I've been told!!) So keep yourself busy, put that posi in your Riv!

    Thanks everyone. :TU:

They say its easier with a support group.
You all have helped get me through the first half of the first day. Which is at work, where I always smoked the most! At home, not so much.
Seems like smoking is a requirement to get a job the printing business.

  11. Dale I did the same thing your doing now almost 5 years ago to the day !!!!. I can tell you what you can look forward to. 1st the next 3 days are going to be the hardest , then it will ease some , thats the bad part.
    Now for the good part

You will fell SO MUCH BETTER you cant even imagine , your energy level will increase as your lungs clear and you breathe easier .

You will be able to run !!! Im a rather large (read that fat ) individual but not long after smoking I had the need to do a quick sprint , I went & did it without even realizing what I was doing . My wife pointed it out to me afterwards saying "You wouldnt have even been able to WALK that far without hacking a few months ago , you just ran it ".

You will save money , you will, theres no way to stop it . Ciggys are expensive .

You will have the pride of knowing that you beat something thats very hard to beat , hell of a confidence booster.

My wife is still impressed that I could actually do it . My guess is yours will be too

Btw I smoked from the time I was 15 till I was 33. I used the same method your using now to quit

    Hey Marlboro :moonu:

i quit for 1 1/2 yrs. about 10 yrs. ago. the first week was the toughest for me. but man the things i got done, started working out, seemed like i had money to burn and that was when smokes were still "cheap". kick myself everyday for starting back up, but my lifestyle at the time time didn't support it. i'm working on getting the mindset to do it again, soon hopefully. its as much a lifestyle change as breaking the addiction. with support and a strong will you can do it. i also meditated/prayed,seemed to help calm my nerves. keep us posted, maybe you'll inspire me to give it another try. good luck!
