    STAGE-2 TORQUE STAGE-1 Buick "494Stroker" in 2021

... was paid for yesterday .

MY BUICK 455 REGAL IS ALMOST COMPLETED!:beer

Last year I bought a TH400 3-speed automatic short-tail from a friend of mine for $125. Yesterday, I was supposed to have finally gotten the SPECS on it (year, car it came out of) but Tyrone forgot me and ran-out to the Swap-Meet (after getting my balance of course ... lol). Tyrone only charged me ONLY $475 for a TOTAL rebuild (shift-kit/valvebody included) ... cause' we go waaaay-back (years ago, I sold him a complete 10-bolt 8.5" posi rear out of a 1990 Caprice for $300).

Next week, I am scheduled to view the tranny (pieces laid out) and take detailed pics ... especially of the tranny's ID tag.

Tyrone told me the sprang gets special attention (due to Buick 455 TORQUE) and extra clutches will be added.

If there is anything special I should mention to the Transmission-Builder ... please let me know.

    PS -- I am still WAITING FOR MY D&S BUICK 455 ENGINE/2800-TORQUE CONVERTER, 1973 4-BBL BUICK 455 ROCHESTER, and 1974 BUICK 455 H.E.I. :Dou:.

    So-Far-So-Good.:)

I don't have a good feeling about this. Tyrone, your buddy is playing the old fashioned Transmission work is a "Black Art" card. Pick up a copy of Ron Sessions book on the TH400 and you will be able to tell exactly what the TH400 is from and what needs to be done to make it live behind a 455 Buick.

As for the price; that is between you and him. Seems like you are a "retail" friend to me, IMHO.

I am confused (Tyrone, your buddy is playing the old fashioned Transmission work is a "Black Art" card). This guy has been doing race transmissions for over a decade that I knew him. I have the TH400 facts book (just tried to locate it ... can't turn the light on ... girlfriend is sleep AND I WILL DIE) my ex-wife bought me from Barnes & Noble years back.

All the other car-guys say I am getting a deal ($$$) on the tranny rebuild. I just needed to know of any additional info regarding a TH400 3-speed short-tail tranny build-up for a Buick 455.

    Thanks just the same.

... TOOK THESE PICS TODAY AFTER WORK.

I was told it's a 1970 Buick th400 from a Buick 455-car (?). I was also told that the bell-housing has RIBS inside for added strenght, and that not all TH400's have the RIBS inside.

The left side of the tranny ID badge (located on passenger's side) has (70- 0B) and the right side of the ID tag has (8789).

My transmission will be completed before the weekend.:TU:

A THM400 with a tag that reads 70 OB was originally behind an Oldsmobile 455 in a 1970 Oldsmobile 98.

The tranny-guy told me he's MODIFYING the stock valve-body; do I need to buy the TCI valve-body? He also mentioned a stronger Buick 455 Fly-Wheel? Is that really necessary???

    Please help.

A stock T400 can be run behind most 455's with no problem. Any kind of rebuild kit from a decent supplier will work fine. Your list looks good. Way back when the transmissions were a little younger all we did was pick up a decent unit from a 'yard and put a shift kit in it. Good to go. Sounds like a reasonable price for a rebuild especially with the upgrades. I'd run away from a trans shop if they tell you a T400 is a hard rebuild.

The only difference between most T400's in the different makes is valve body shift quality and timing which it looks like they are taking care of.

5500 is a good all around spot to start with the governor.

The question I'd have to ask is why this is in the "Regal" section instead of the "Transmission" section? Pretty much doesn't have anything to do with what car it is going in unless you had questions about floor clearance or such. You sometimes miss out on good answers when you don't place a question in the right spot. I'm sure there are people who know trannies who don't even look at the "Regal" section. Same goes for engines, carbs, rears and other stuff like that. Better to ask questions in that specific area. Again, if it has to do with installation into a "Regal" or other specific car then you are better served in that area.

    HEY, MIKE:TU:.

Again, "You-Rock," and I really appreciate your expertise ... MUCH.

    I remember the days of "th400 from the junk-yard for $75 with a 30-day warranty ... and a shift-kit":TU: too ... B&M back-in-the-days.

I agree with staying away from a guy that says, "building a th400 is hard/tricky.":bglasses: One engine-builder (I never had anything done by him .. and he RESPECTS/hates BUICK) told me @ 2 years ago NOT to put a th200-r4 behind a Buick 455, cause' a Buick (455) will burn that tranny up ... unless you put big $$$ into it.

Also, thanks for the thumbs-up on my tranny rebuild fee ... annnd posting "tranny-stuff" in that particular section ... especially for feedback quality (lol):TU:.

In closing, Mike ... please tell me if I need to upgrade from the stock Buick 455 flywheel?????

I've run stock ones into the 11's no problem. Inspect it to make sure it is in good shape. Watch for cracks around the bolt holes. A fresh stock replacement one wouldn't hurt.

    Hey, Mike:TU:;

The guy (Tyrone Taylor of Bklyn) that built my tranny told me yesterday the he raced you at Englishtown ... when you had that Red Buick455 Trans Am (that was kicking ass).

He looooves that car!!!! He has a 69 Trans Am Poncho455. He told me this, "Chris ... THAT CAR FLIES!!!! He has the STOCK Buick intake ... AND ONE PIPE!!!" Tyrone was really excited talking about you and that Trans Am455 Buick you had. It is indeed a small world.:TU:

It is always a pleasure communicating with ... A LEGEND such as yourself.

    Rock-On, Mike!!!!:3gears:
