I had to change out my bearing and seal on my passenger side axle due to in and out play. It is a non-C clip unit so had to slide hammer the unit out and back in. I had the seal and bearing pressed onto the axle and everything looked ok prior to putting the axle back in. I now have a leak coming from the seal area running down the brake side of the backing plate.

Any idea what I might have done wrong or can anyone give me a play-by-play of how the axle should have been installed?

It is not making any noise that I can tell and seems to be working ok.

I'll take a look at my chassis manual tonight, and post what it says (unless somebody here beats me to it - Smartin? Larry? )

    How much is it leaking?

It is slinging inside the wheel and some on the wheel wells but don't see any in the drum or on the brakes. I haven't checked the level since I got back from Temple. Filled it up before we left.

When I got to Temple and found the problem, it was down about an inch from where I originally filled it. Does that make sense?

Hmm...I'd think you'd have oil in the brakes if the seal was leaking...think I'll go home for lunch and look at the book, this is making me wonder...

You can see that it is running straight down behind the wheel studs. I'm really not sure how it isn't getting inside the drum. I haven't pulled it off since I got home, but it wasn't doing it when I change my wheels after racing.

Thanks for taking a look at your book for me!!! :TU:

Dee, I've got the book, but it'd be better if I could fax them to you, so's you'd have the pictures to go with the text. 2-3 pages, I'll have to wait until after 5:00 to send from work, you got a fax number I can send them to?

Or, now that I think about it, I have one of those Chassis Manuals on CD, maybe I can email you the pages out of it, but I don't know if that'll work, never done that before. :Do No:

Or, if you're not in a hurry, I can snailmail them. :Dou:

I've got a fax here at work. Got several e-mail addresses too. If you have them in a picture format, then you can attach them to an e-mail. Just let me know what is easiest for you. I just really appreciate your help!!!! :TU:

I'm headed home, I'll try and email or PM you the pages off the CD. In the meanwhile, if you'd PM me your fax number, in case the CD thing won't work, I'll send them via fax in the am.

Glad to help, I hate leaks!

    rear seal problem

I wonder if the seal was pressed on backwards, removed and put on the right way. Maybe tore it inside? You probably have to replace it again. But if it is dry inside the drum I'd check the vent on top of the axle housing. Perhaps there was too much rear axle grease or the axle grease became contaminated and is being pushed out the vent?

Or the seal was the wrong size?

Only have a computer at work. I'll send you a PM.

I think we put lithium grease on the seal prior to putting the axle back in. I think.

Sorry, Dee, I can't email the files, but I can fax the pages. What's your FAX number?

Looks like you'll get to pull the axle again...

No. I haven't made time to deal with it. :spank: Notice I did say "make time".

I'm starting to determine I've got too many cars and not enough time for all of them. Went to drive the Z28 today and the battery was dead. Has it been that long since I had it out? :Dou:

Thanks for asking. :beer I'll let you know what I find when I make time to look at it.

I'd be GLAD to give one of your convertibles a good home. Trade for a small white dog, answers to "Skippy"??? :Brow:

So....is Taishan lonely? :Brow:  :Brow:

(Skippy's a nice dog, she and I just have a 'personality conflict'.) :error:

Oh no. She's not lonely. And sure don't need another woman in the house. Taishan is queen and she lets everyone know it. We are just alike!!! :Brow:

    Seal leaks!!!!!!!!!

    1. seal was ruptured when installed.
    2. seal was installed backwards( flat side in and round radius side out toward retaining plate.)
    3. seal was installed dry. (lube both the outer and the inner rubber areas with grease, outer can be siliconed too if nessesary.)
    4. inner housing tube dirty(has to have a nice clean surface to seat correctly) or has a gouge in the seating surface area( in this cast you might have to use silicone on the outer diameter of the seal to take up the depth in the gouge the seal can not.)

The best way to see where it is coming from is to clean everything real good with brake cleaner. go for a drive around the block turn in the oppisite direction of the side that is leaking. This will push the fluid down the tube and hopefully will quickly show a leak. Do not go far. You do not want the inner area drench in fluid only enough to show where the leak is. Keep working your way up till it shows. Long process but sometime the only way. Good luck, Jim
